Charlton Athletic Set For Transfer Boost As Championship Side Target 23-Year-Old

Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic could be set to receive a boost in their pursuit of Coventry City striker Matt Godden with reports that the Sky Blues are interested in signing Belgian forward Mitcy Ntelo, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

The 23-year-old is currently contracted to Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria but is reportedly of interest to the Sky Blues which could unlock the door for Matt Godden to leave with Charlton Athletic already keen to sign the striker.

How would the signing of Ntelo would free up Godden?

Matt Godden is currently the third choice striker at Coventry City behind Ellis Simms and Haji Wright, but is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract at the CBS Arena, whilst the club are also set to welcome Fabio Tavares back from injury as well as Justin Obikwu following his stint on loan with Grimsby Town.

Godden suffered a drop in game time last season and is one player who could be allowed to leave the Sky Blues this summer if a replacement was brought in.

Would Godden be a good signing for Charlton?

The 32-year-old has been with the Sky Blues since his 2019 switch from Peterborough United. In his debut season, Godden scored 15 goals in 33 games as Coventry clinched the League One title.

Since that season, Godden has made an additional 123 appearances for Mark Robins’ side, scoring 35 goals and providing nine assists as well as hitting double figures in the 2021/22 campaign as Coventry finished mid-table in the Championship.

Godden has also captained the Sky Blues previously and has a large amount of EFL experience with both Coventry and Peterborough as well as his stint with Stevenage.

Charlton have already said goodbye to the likes of Connor Wickham, Kazenga LuaLua and loanee Freddie Ladapo, opening the door for at least one striker to join Nathan Jones’ side this summer.

Are Coventry likely to sign Ntelo?

Ntelo is reportedly available for just £1 million and is on Coventry City’s radar ahead of the 2024/25 Championship campaign. The Sky Blues have already signed Australian winger Raphael Borges Rodrigues as well as confirming the arrival of January signing Ephron Mason-Clark from Peterborough.

With the Sky Blues likely to be in the market for at least one striker this summer, there is a strong possibility that Godden would be available to leave before the window closes which gives Charlton a major boost in their pursuit of him.
