Charlton Athletic are set to sign forward Matt Godden from Championship side Coventry City, replacing the outgoing Alfie May who’s expected to sign for Birmingham.

The 32-year-old was the subject of interest from fellow Championship side Oxford United but it’s Nathan Jones’ Charlton that have won the race for the striker with the player already completing a medical with the club.

Godden has been a loyal servant for the Sky Blues, featuring regularly in both League One and the Championship it is now set for a fresh start in the third tier.

How did Godden fare last season?

Despite being the club’s third-choice option last season, Godden managed 41 appearances in all competitions for Mark Robins’ side, scoring nine goals and providing an additional assist.

Godden featured in Coventry’s 2022/23 Championship play-off final as well as their FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United last season.

The forward joined the Sky Blues for £750,000 from Peterborough United in August 2019, finishing his debut season as the club’s top scorer as they won the League One title.

He’s since featured over 100 times for the Sky Blues but is now set to sign for Charlton Athletic according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Replacing Alfie May?

Fellow journalist Richard Cawley has confirmed that May is set to sign a three-year contract with Birmingham City shortly, which is likely to be the reason why Charlton have opted to sign Godden.

May finished last season as the League One Golden Boot winner and has been snapped up by newly-relegated Birmingham City.

Although May is a proven EFL goalscorer at both Cheltenham and Charlton, Godden has proven himself at a higher level and brings a higher level of experience to the League One side.

Charlton and Coventry have agreed a fee for the striker, with Godden completing a medical with Nathan Jones’s side yesterday and the deal is now set to be officially confirmed.
