Charlton Athletic Set to Land Double Free Agent Signing

Charlton Athletic are reportedly set to land two free agent signings on short-term deals as they look to bolster their squad after the transfer window closed.

The League One side had a quiet summer compared to many of their third tier counterparts, adding only nine players. Luke Berry, Alex Mitchell, Matty Godden and Gassan Ahadme all linked up with the Addicks this summer with Nathan Jones keen to target promotion in his first full season in charge at the Valley.

Now it would appear that the Welshman is not happy with the depth in his squad, as it has been reported by journalist Richard Cawley that both striker Danny Hylton and Dan Potts will be joining Charlton Athletic on short term deals.

Potts has been without a club since leaving Luton Town in the summer, having previously been on the books of West Ham United, Portsmouth and Colchester United throughout his career. He has experience across the EFL having played 95 times in the Championship, 84 in League Two and 29 in League One.

Hylton also left his former club at the end of last season, having been contracted to fellow League One side Northampton Town, he has also been a player for Luton Town, but also Oxford United, Rotherham United, AFC Wimbledon, Bury and Aldershot. The 35-yearold has 445 career appearances and 115 goals., with the vast majority coming in League Two.

The Luton Town Connection

Whilst on paper these may look like risky signings, especially Danny Hylton. However, Jones is looking for depth rather than natural starters and players that will be able to coming in and get to grips with his style of play quickly. Both players have played under the Charlton manager before with Potts having appeared 165 times for Jones with Hylton registering 158 appearances, 59 goals and 17 assists.

Both players are clearly people he feels he can trust to come into the squad and provide added cover and perhaps some experience to his side as they look to push for promotion in a difficult and competitive league.

Charlton Athletic – Can Jones Do It?

Many would have looked at a side who are desperate to put themselves back into contention towards the top of the table selling the league’s top scorer as a baffling decision. But such is the trust that the fanbase and the club have in Jones that they have seemingly not lost any sleep. They have reinvested well and there appears to be a belief that has been missing from the club for a number of years especially under the likes of Garner and Appleton. The Addicks appear to have a toolset the manager wants, and also a willingness to back him further with free agent signings.

It could be a season to remember for Charlton Athletic fans.
