Charlton Athletic Transfer Report Refuted By Journalist

Huddersfield Town have not agreed a deal for Charlton Athletic’s Alfie May, with reports suggesting that negotiations today moved forward between the two clubs.

The Terriers were said to have made a breakthrough in their negotiations for the Addicks striker today, having a bid of £750,000 accepted for the 30-year-old. May only arrived at the Valley last summer, having departed now relegated Cheltenham Town.

Huddersfield will be planning a bid for an immediate return to the Championship after their relegation from the second tier last campaign. At the same time, Charlton disappointed in their bid for promotion, finding themselves in the relegation fight for a short period.

Disappointing campaigns for both Huddersfield and Charlton.

Despite May’s prolific form in front of goal, Charlton found themselves in the bottom half of the table towards the end of the season. They ultimately finished 16th in League One last year, the main reason for the poor form being their defensive vulnerabilities. While scoring goals, 64 this previous campaign, they conceded one more goal than that, leaving them with a -1 goal difference. That free-scoring form was led by Alfie May, who finished the campaign with 23 goals, picking up League One’s Golden Boot award.

Huddersfield headed into their final day knowing their fate, finishing six points behind Plymouth. With the two relegated teams joining them in League One from the Championship, you would expect to compete closely with them, especially considering Birmingham are said to have a transfer budget of £20 million this summer. However, Rotherham are a side that could be considered to have a disappointing campaign, having picked up just 27 points in the Championship.

Conflicting reports emerge on Charlton Athletic striker’s future.

It has been a day of confusion for Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town fans with updates from two different sources emerging on the transfer activity. Football Insider first broke that the Terriers had agreed on a fee and begun personal negotiations with Alfie May.

However, that report was soon refuted by journalist Richard Cawley, who said that the situation has not changed in regards to the two clubs agreeing upon a fee. Cawley went on to say that he is not ruling out a move for the striker, who has one year remaining on his deal at the Valley.

Could Alfie be on the move again?

Despite only joining the Addicks last year, the striker could again be on the move in the transfer market. As referenced earlier, a bottom-half finish could be seen as a disappointment, and having moved from Cheltenham Town, a side that had finished in that position before his move. That could have left the striker sharing in the disappointment felt by fans.

He may be 30 years old, but May proved last season he could still score goals with his top scorer award in the league with a side in the bottom half. That goalscoring form has seen the 30-year-old gain plenty of attention over the years, and a promotion-chasing club could be an attractive prospect to the English striker. With a year left on May’s contract, the South London club could see no option but to sell the striker.
