Charlton Athletic vs Wycombe Wanderers League One Play-Off Match Report

Charlton Athletic

The Valley played host to a match that saw Charlton Athletic defeat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 to secure a place in the League One Play-Off Final.

The solitary goal from Matthew Godden was enough to secure the win for Charlton in a game that did not feature much attacking quality.

The First Half:

The best chance early on fell in favour of the hosts when Matt Godden was played through on goal. The striker played a dangerous ball across the box towards Tyrese Campbell, who could not arrive in time to make any contact.

Both keepers would have felt quite comfortable in the opening thirty minutes, with neither of the pair being called into action, showing a lack of goalmouth action.

It was a stop-start first half of football with a lot of fouls being called, meaning the game was not able to get into any sort of rhythm and denying either side an opportunity to establish control in the match.

Less than ten minutes before half-time, Lloyd Jones was presented with a golden chance to give his side the lead. Matt Godden once again provided the ball that reached the Englishman at the far post. Jones did not make the right contact, however, as his headed attempt went well wide of the goal.

The deadlock could not be broken in the opening 45 minutes, but the Charlton fans would certainly be happy with how their team were playing. Wycombe, on the other hand, had very little to cheer about as they carried very little threat, only registering an xG of 0.06.

The Second Half:

Wycombe would have their best chance so far in the 56th minute when Richard Kone isolated his defender and tried to blast his shot in at the near post, with his attempt narrowly missing the target.

The next chance fell to the hosts as Thierry Small broke forward. The 20-year-old cut in from the right wing before curling an effort towards the bottom left corner of Franco Ravizzoli’s goal, which nearly crept into the bottom corner.

Chances were starting to come now, and Wycombe were next to have a great opportunity to take the lead. Both Garath McCleary and Xavier Simons had opportunities but were both denied by some heroic defending from Charlton to keep the game level.

The breakthrough did come eventually as Charlton took the lead through Matt Godden. The goal was created by the persistence of Lloyd Jones, whose effort fell to Godden, who found the finish to give his side an invaluable lead.

This goal also ensured that Godden had his best goal-scoring season of his career as the 33-year-old hit 21 goals in all competitions on the night.

Mike Dodds tried to freshen up his time by introducing three new players to the game in the 87th minute, with time quickly running out for the visitors.

Charlton would preserve their lead, however, and would move forward to the League One Play-off final, where they will face Leyton Orient with the prize being promotion to the Championship.
