Charlton Athletic Plot Summer Transfer Reunion

Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic are lining up a summer move for former academy defender Brendan Wiredu from League Two side Fleetwood Town.

The 25-year-old has been an integral part of Pete Wild’s defence during the 2024/25 season, though his side appear highly unlikely to finish inside the play-off places this season.

Wiredu was the subject of a failed January switch to fellow League One side Wigan Athletic but now appears likely to depart the League Two outfit this summer.

As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Charlton Athletic are keen to bring Wiredu back to the Valley despite letting him leave as a youngster.

However, fellow promotion-chasers Huddersfield Town have also been credited with an interest in signing the defender.

Wiredu to make League One return?

This summer could prove to be extremely challenging for Fleetwood Town in terms of their attempts to try and keep Wiredu in the building.

The defender is under contract at the League Two side until June 2026, meaning it will take a fee to prize him away from Fleetwood this summer.

Huddersfield are battling for a play-off place at present, whilst Charlton Athletic have an outside chance of finishing in the top two of League One, thus being a Championship side next season.

Wiredu could have made the move in January, but issues during his medical saw a move to Wigan Athletic fall through at the final hurdle.

With Fleetwood unlikely to be promoted this season, there is a likelihood that Wiredu will move on this summer, thus making his side money in the process.

How has he fared this season for Fleetwood?

Despite Fleetwood’s relegation from League One last season, the 25-year-old remained committed to his side and has captained them this season in League Two.

He’s registered 37 appearances across all competitions for Fleetwood Town this season, scoring twice during matches against Salford City and Notts County.

Unsurprisingly, Wiredu has remained as one of Fleetwood’s key performers this season.

Would this be a good move for all parties?

Charlton & Huddersfield are both competing for the top six of League One and the move would certainly be an upgrade both in terms of quality and financially for the 25-year-old.

Wiredu’s versatility could also play into Charlton’s hands next season regardless of the division they will be playing within.

Any move would be a key blow for Fleetwood Town given he’s been ever-present as captain this season, but the finances involved in the deal could allow for the club to bring in two or three new players that could take them back to League One themselves.
