Premier League side Chelsea have confirmed the sale of Huddersfield Town star Leo Castledine to Championship side Middlesbrough, in a deal that could rise to over £1 million.

The versatile forward has been a key player for Lee Grant’s Huddersfield Town, having joined the League One promotion hopefuls on loan at the start of the season.

The 20-year-old has chipped in with 10 goals in 23 league appearances, with a further two goals in cup competitions.

This was the second loan spell of Castledine’s career, having spent a period on loan at Shrewsbury Town in the 2024/25 season.

He was a regular scorer at youth level for Chelsea, scoring a total of 36 goals across the academy competitions, but has now been able to replicate that at senior level in League One.

His goalscoring exploits don’t just stop at club level, with the attacking midfielder contributing five goals across England’s under 17s, 18s and 19s.

Middlesbrough have confirmed the signing from Chelsea. The club are expected to pay just under £1 million, with add-ons and sell on clause potentially taking it into a seven-figure deal.

Huddersfield Town Lose Star Can They Cope?

The risk of any loan player is that they do “too well” in the first half of the season which attracts fresh interest from leagues above. This appears to have been exactly the scenario that played out. His important contributions across the third tier have attracted Championship interest, and with the League One side not having the power to stop it, he inevitably moves on.

Attention for the Terriers now must turn to securing a replacement, whether that be through the loan market or a permanent deal.

With some high profile situations to resolve such as multi-million pound signing Joe Taylor’s future, this is a problem the club could have done without.

Louie Barry from Aston Villa appears to be the natural option, with The Deck’s Gary Hutchinson revealing exclusively that the player was set to move to League One on loan this season. It would be a show of ambition, with the player having already proven he has what it takes to perform at a high League One level.

Is Castledine a Good Signing for Middlesbrough from Chelsea?

Castledine has shown he can perform at a high League One level, however it is still early in his career. The fact that Middlesbrough have been able to secure him on a permanent deal means that the club can have more patience whilst he adapts to a faster more competitive division.

He has the potential to be one of the EFL’s next great products. But at just 20, expectations need to be kept realistic. Middlesbrough are in a title race, behind Frank Lampard’s Coventry City.

To ask a youngster to come in and contribute to what is an intense situation in the race for the Premier League is a big ask. However, given time to settle in he has the opportunity to get a promotion on his CV and become a firm Premier League player, which will surely boost his value and confidence.
