Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have had another busy summer window, with multiple players joining and departing throughout the summer, but it appears as though an unexpected twist could see one player stay.
Chelsea beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday, courtesy of goals from Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez. Enzo Maresca‘s side now sit top of the table, albeit having played a game more than both Arsenal and Liverpool. However, Chelsea were dealt a fresh blow during the game, which has thrown a spanner in the works of a potential transfer.
With only days remaining before the window closes, the collapse has thrown uncertainty over the Blues’ late window plans.
Chelsea forward suffers transfer collapse
According to David Ornstein, Chelsea have informed Bayern Munich they will not be proceeding with the proposed loan of Nicolas Jackson.
The news comes after Blues’ striker Liam Delap suffered an injury during the Fulham game, which required the Englishman to be substituted after just 14 minutes.
Jackson had already travelled to Germany to complete his loan move to the German champions. However, Chelsea have requested that the 24-year-old returns to London.
The collapse could have a potential domino effect. With Chelsea only having one international loan spot left, they intended to use that with Jackson. However, that spot is now free for another player to depart Stamford Bridge on loan.
Tyrique George is the most likely Chelsea player to take the final loan spot. The 19-year-old is attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Roma and RB Leipzig.
Why Was Jackson Available For Loan In The First Place?
Chelsea were looking to offload the 24-year-old on a season-long loan deal. This was because of both Joao Pedro and Liam Delap both arriving for sizeable fees during the summer. Jackson had dropped to third-choice striker after the incomings mentioned above.
Pedro and Delap were both likely brought in to replace Jackson. The London club believe both signings can score 15+ Premier League goals-a-season, which would give them a higher chance of securing the league title. To clarify, Chelsea haven’t won the league since 2017.
To conclude, the effect on Chelsea is minimal. Jackson will most likely be used as a rotation option for Pedro until Delap returns. The English striker is out for eight weeks with a hamstring injury. Once Delap is cleared to return and Chelsea stay clear of injuries, Jackson could be allowed to leave on loan in January.
