Cheltenham Town are the only side yet to pick up a point in League Two, meaning work is still yet to be done in the transfer market.
Conceding eleven and only scoring one at the other end suggests the Robins will likely need to secure some game-changing signings before the September 1st deadline.
However, one of their prayers may be answered, with a former promotion-winning defender set to join the club.
Sam Sherring to Cheltenham Town
According to reports from Gloucestershire Live, Sam Sherring is set to become a Cheltenham Town player.
The central defender will be joining the club on loan from MK Dons, yet to make an appearance in the division since January.
However, it cannot be understated that Sherring has proven to be a top player in the division.
When the 25-year-old made the move to Stadium MK last summer, it was regarded as one of the biggest coups in the league.
Moreover, the former Torquay United defender has promotion pedigree at the level, having achieved automatic promotion with Northampton Town in the 2022-23 season.
Additionally, he went on to be one of their standout performers as the club survived comfortably in League One.
He was limited to 13 appearances with the Dons and has now found himself behind the likes of Marvin Ekpiteta, Jon Mellish, and Jack Sanders.
What Will Sherring Bring to Cheltenham Town?
It goes without saying that the Gloucestershire club are in dire need of defensive reinforcements.
With their defensive record amongst the worst in the division so far, second only to Shrewsbury Town, it can be expected that the 25-year-old will walk into the starting line-up.
Having previously proven himself in the division, it can be assumed that Sherring was a victim of the set-up at MK Dons last season.
A huge struggle for MK last season was due to the play style.
Setting up in a possession-based back three, Dons conceded 66 goals in the division last season.
Additionally, MK have since added richly to their defensive ranks, leaving several good players out of favour due to the quality of the squad.
Making the move to Cheltenham, the central defender could benefit from a more direct approach under Michael Flynn.
Town currently have defenders James Wilson and Robbie Cundy sidelined, which could make Sherring’s debut against Salford City likely.
Could Cheltenham Town Avoid the Drop?
As previously mentioned, their dismal start to the campaign has the club favored for the drop by many.
However, the squad does still boast some excellent players for the level.
Ethon Archer and Jordan Thomas are established as some of the most exciting players in League Two, while Luke Young and Ryan Broom are dependable.
Joe Day is an excellent goalkeeper, while Michael Flynn’s pragmatic approach has shown to work in the division.
Adding Sherring to their ranks brings another player proven at the level, which could upgrade their defence entirely.
While Cheltenham still have work to do in other areas of the pitch before the deadline, Sherring’s arrival is a good start.
However, additions up front are a must, with the club yet to register their second league goal.
