Boston United have completed a significant piece of business by securing the loan signing of experienced centre-back Jamie Grimes from Chesterfield until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old arrives with a wealth of experience and leadership, having captained the Spireites to the National League title in 2024 and playing a central role in their return to the Football League. Grimes has made 166 league appearances for Chesterfield since joining the club in 2021 and was named in the National League Team of the Season during their title-winning campaign.

Boston boss Paul Hurst adds a proven organiser to his defensive unit, with Grimes expected to bring authority, aerial strength and game management to a Pilgrims back line pushing for a strong finish to the campaign. During his time at Chesterfield, Grimes established himself as a consistent presence at the heart of defence and a respected figure in the dressing room.

Grimes will wear squad number 23 during his spell at York Street and is registered and eligible to make his debut this weekend, with Boston hosting Sutton United on Saturday.

Jamie Grimes Career

The defender began his career in the academy at Leicester City before moving to Swansea City, where he made his senior debut in 2009. His early career included loan spells at Haverfordwest County and Forest Green Rovers, before he went on to build a substantial non-league and EFL career.

Grimes has since represented Kidderminster Harriers, Dover Athletic, Cheltenham Town, Macclesfield Town, Ebbsfleet United and Hereford, gaining experience across the National League system and the EFL along the way.

Boost for Boston United

For Boston United, this represents a statement addition at a key stage of the season. Bringing in a title-winning captain with close to 200 appearances for his parent club underlines the ambition to add resilience and leadership in the run-in, with Grimes set to play an important role both on the pitch and within the squad during his time as a Pilgrim.

Having recently changed managers, the Pilgrims are going through a turbulent time, and maybe need a leader at the back who understands the division and what is required to get out of it the right way. At 35, this isn’t a development loan; it is definitely the end of his Chesterfield career, but perhaps the start of something in South Lincolnshire.
