Chesterfield have confirmed defender Laurence Maguire has extended his loan deal with Crawley Town until the end of the season, via a statement on the club’s website.
The 26-year-old arrived at the League Two side during the summer on a six-month loan deal, but this has now been extended until the end of the 2023/24 season when the defender’s contract expires.
Who is Laurence Maguire?
The defender is a product of Chesterfield’s youth setup and has been involved in or around the first team since the 2015/16 season and has made over 160 appearances for the Spireites.
Since making the move to Crawley Town, Maguire has made 21 appearances in all competitions whilst adding two goals to his tally in matches against Stockport County on his debut and Sutton United in late September.
However, he is also known for being the younger brother of Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire.
His contract situation
Maguire’s contract at Chesterfield is due to expire at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, making it rather intriguing that his loan has been extended until the end of the League Two season.
However, journalist Liam Norcliffe has confirmed that the 26-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the season, opening up the possibility of him leaving the National League side this summer.
Closing in on the EFL
Chesterfield are currently flying high at the top of the National League table, 12 points ahead of Bromley whilst having a game in hand on the majority of their promotion contenders.
The club have suffered exits in both the FA Trophy and FA Cup, meaning their priority will be to seal promotion as early as possible and plan for next season.
Writer’s View
Maguire has been through both the highs and lows during his time with the Spireites, but this season the side hasn’t appeared to have missed the defender.
He’s also had an impressive stint at Crawley Town, with whom I’d expect to try and complete a permanent deal for the player. However, he now has EFL experience which could prove vital for Paul Cook’s side next season.
