Chesterfield Provide Significant Player Update

Chesterfield have confirmed striker Joe Quigley has put pen to paper on a new contract with the National League leaders, via a statement on the club’s website.

The 26-year-old has had an impressive start to the campaign under Paul Cook, even despite the arrival of Will Grigg and has now earned the reward that his performances have deserved.

Quigley has made 16 appearances in the National League so far this season, scoring seven goals in the process, even despite starting just four of those matches.

The forward also has four goals in his last five league appearances and is certainly pushing Will Grigg for the starting place in the National League side, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup clash against League One side Leyton Orient.

He joined Chesterfield in January 2022, following a two-year stint with National League South side Yeovil Town and has also had spells with the likes of Maidstone United, Bromley and AFC Bournemouth.

His contract was due to expire at the end of the 2023/24 season but has now penned a new contract until June 2025, allowing him to push further towards the 100-appearance mark for the football club. He is currently on 81, having netted 16 goals in the process under Paul Cook’s management.

The Spireites have had an impressive season so far and currently find themselves 11 points clear at the top of the table, whilst having a game in-hand on the teams directly below them.

Upon the announcement, Quigley spoke to the club’s website where he stated…

“I’m really pleased to have got it done. It’s a great time because the club is going in the right direction.

Promotion is the clear aim this season and hopefully we can maintain our good run.”

Writer’s View

Even despite Will Grigg’s impressive start to the National League season, Quigley has regularly pushed him for the starting role and news of his new deal will come as a delight for the club.

By penning a new deal, he also opens himself up to the opportunity of returning to League Two with his side sat at the top of the National League table and is already beginning to run away with it.
