Chesterfield Secure Double Signing

Chesterfield

League Two outfit Chesterfield have confirmed two new signings via their website and social media channels. The Spireites have announced the signings of 31 year-old defender Janoi Donacien on a free transfer and 22-year-old striker Bim Pepple on loan from Luton Town for the rest of this season.

This comes as welcome news for Spireites fans as the Derbyshire side are in the midst of an injury crisis and are in desperate need to bolster their squad during the current transfer window. In terms of defenders, Paul Cook’s side have been without centre-half Chey Dunkley for some time now while central defender Tyrone Williams is also currently on the injury list. Full-back Devan Tanton has also recently returned to parent club Fulham following an injury-hit loan spell at Chesterfield.

With full-backs Lewis Gordon and Vontae Daley-Campbell also unavailable due to injuries, the Spireites back line has looked increasingly barren over the past couple of months. This has led to Paul Cook deploying popular Spireites player Tom Naylor as a centre-half for the majority of this season so far rather than his favoured position in midfield. It comes as no surprise then that Cook has now brought in a new defender.

Donacien Provides Experience for Chesterfield

Donacien is from the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia and has represented his country at senior international level. The defender has previously played under Paul Cook during their time together at Ipswich Town so the Spireites boss clearly sees Donacien as a trusted player to bring in at the midway point of the 2024/25 campaign.

As well as Ipswich Town, Donacien has also previously played for Accrington Stanley where he made over 100 competitive appearances and also made 19 appearances on loan for Fleetwood Town during the 2020/21 season.

Cook Strengthens the Chesterfield Attack

The Spireites have also had to battle through injury concerns regarding strikers. Popular forward and Northern Irish international Will Grigg is currently injured while Paddy Madden has also struggled with injuries which has blighted his time at the Spireites since joining the club in the summer. In recent games, Cook has been forced to hand over a lot of responsibility to young striker Kane Drummond. While Drummond has played well and has demonstrated an excellent work rate, he lacks EFL experience so it comes as no surprise either that Cook has now made a move to strengthen his forward line.

Pepple has spent the majority of this season so far playing on loan at National League side Southend United. He scored ten times in 21 competitive appearances for the Shrimpers before being recalled by parent club Luton Town ahead of his switch to Chesterfield.
