Stevenage had released a statement early on Friday stating that star striker, Jamie Reid, would miss the whole of August due to a medical condition, but has since taken down the post leaving fans confused.
Their leading frontman was present in Stevenage’s tour abroad over the last few days but could be set to miss the initial opening of the 2024/25 campaign.
Reid set League One alight last season
Jamie Reid was signed by Stevenage in 2021 from Mansfield Town, the striker netted six crucial goals for the Hertfordshire side as Boro narrowly stayed up in League Two as Steve Evans performed a heroic rescue mission with the struggling team.
Stevenage defied all expectations of them the following season as Evans masterminded a second-placed finish which saw Boro return to the third tier of English football for the first time since 2014.
In that season Boro finished rock bottom of League One, however, last season Jamie Reid stepped up and helped the team push for a playoff position right until the final few games of the season.
Reid’s form was incredible, scoring 18 times in 42 League One appearances, making the Torquay-born striker the joint-third top goalscorer in the division despite only recording 10 goals in League Two the campaign before.
Stevenage’s provided a worrying update on their top goalscorer before taking the post down
Jamie Reid continued to progress despite recently turning thirty as the Stevenage striker was handed his international debut for Northern Ireland, sealing the fairytale season with an international debut goal.
However, Stevenage released a shock update, which has since been mysteriously taken down, regarding their star striker.
On Friday morning (19/7/24) Stevenage released a statement revealing that ‘Jamie Reid has a medical condition that is expected to keep him out of first-team contention for a while’.
The League One side provided further detail in their statement, that has been reported by BBC Sport, which explained ‘the condition was discovered following his return from international duty with Northern Ireland and it’s expected that the 30-year-old striker, who scored 21 goals last season, will miss the opening month of the season’.
Another twist took place following the announcement as Stevenage took down both tweets regarding Reid’s medical condition, leaving fans in the dark as to why the posts have been deleted and what has occurred with Reid.
Reid could miss the first four league games of the season, at least
The information, which is now unclear after the post was deleted, would mean that recently appointed manager, and former player, Alex Revell, will have to prepare and start the upcoming season without his team’s star striker.
Reid is expected to miss at least August as he recovers from the medical condition which would mean he is absent for Stevenage’s clashes with Shrewsbury, Huddersfield, Burton and Lincoln, as well as a first-round EFL Cup tie with Championship side, Norwich City.
