Coventry City are reportedly one of several clubs that are in the running to re-sign a former academy graduate as he remains without a club.
Mark Robins’ side currently sit 17th in the Championship after their opening four league games and have struggled to hit the ground running, though they have started better than the previous campaign.
The Sky Blues recently submitted their squad to the EFL, but only named 24 out of a possible 25 players, which leaves one space free for a free agent to join the club should they want to.
Despite being linked with former loan hero Matty James, it appears that the final spot could be taken by another familiar face instead.
Coventry City target Christie homecoming
As reported by HITC Football journalist Dan Owen, Coventry City are one of several clubs in talks to sign former Hull City defender Cyrus Christie on a free transfer.
The former Sky Blues academy graduate became a free agent this summer after his contract at the Tigers came to an end, though Mark Robins’ side will face strong competition.
Fellow Championship sides, Millwall, Plymouth Argyle and Preston North End as well as SPFL giants Rangers are also in the running to sign the 31-year-old.
How did he fare last season?
The 31-year-old left Coventry in 2014 and has since played for the likes of Derby County, Middlesbrough and Fulham.
During the 2023/24 campaign, Christie made 28 appearances in all competitions for Hull City whilst providing two additional assists, with both of them arriving in a match against Swansea City.
Competition for Milan Van Ewijk
During the summer transfer window, Coventry City allowed Jack Burroughs to sign for Kilmarnock on loan whilst centre-back Joel Latibeaudiere has been temporarily filling in the role.
However, if Milan Van Ewijk were to sustain an injury, suffer a drop in performances or be sold in January, it would leave the Championship side without a recognised right-back.
Christie is a graduate of the Coventry City academy and made plenty of first-team appearances before leaving for Derby County after his contract came to an end and has since made 30 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
