Crystal Palace have entered the race to sign French centre-back Jaydee Canvot, according to reports. Aston Villa had a bid rejected last week by Toulouse for the defender.
Both sides are expected to battle it out in the coming days for Canvot.
Palace Joins Race For Canvot
According to Fabrizio Romano, Crystal Palace have joined the race to sign Toulouse centre back, Jaydee Canvot. The French side turned down a bid from fellow Premier League club, Aston Villa, last week.
Any deal for the defender would be permanent, with Toulouse holding out for at least €20 million.
It’s set to be a battle between Palace and Villa in the coming days in the race to sign Canvot. With fellow centre back Charlie Cresswell also on his way out, it looks like another Toulouse defensive departure this window.
Both centre-backs helped the French club to a 10th-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.
How Did Canvot Fare Last Season?
As an 18-year-old last season, Canvot played 20 times for Toulouse. This is an impressive tally for a teenager in his first season at the senior level.
Playing as a centre back, Canvot was trusted by manager Carles Martinez Novell to steady the ship at the back.
This season, Toulouse has started like a house on fire. The French side have won two games out of two and are yet to concede, with Canvot starting in both games.
As the window draws to a close next Monday, Palace and Villa will both be looking to complete a deal for the 19-year-old centre back.
Both sides are yet to win this season. Palace followed up an opening day goalless draw against Chelsea with a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park against Nottingham Forest.
Similarly, Villa also started with a goalless draw at home to Newcastle United. This was followed by a disappointing one-nil defeat to Brentford.
The young defender would have a better chance of playing at Crystal Palace. With Marc Guehi linked with a move to Liverpool, Canvot would most likely be the Englishman’s replacement.
Both Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are looking to enjoy European glory this season, and Canvot could help them do just that.
