Colchester United recently parted ways with two of their first-team players to allow them to find a new home, and for one of those – his future has now been confirmed.
Danny Cowley’s side are currently 14th in League Two but find themselves a comfortable distance away from the play-off and relegation places – further suggesting they will stay in League Two for another campaign.
Earlier this week, Colchester United confirmed the departures of Matt Jay and Will Greenidge via mutual consent and one of them has already secured a new home.
As confirmed via a statement on the club’s website, National League South title challengers Torquay United have completed the signing of former Colchester United midfielder Matt Jay on a free transfer.
How has he fared this season?
The 28-year-old has featured once this season for Colchester United, which came during a 2-1 victory against MK Dons in the EFL Trophy in September.
He contributed to three goals in 17 league appearances last season but has fell out of favour at the League Two side and was let go in order to secure a move elsewhere.
Jay has signed for sixth-tier side Torquay United on a deal until June 2027 and is keen to help the club secure promotion back to the National League.
The club are currently second in the NL South, level on points with the league leaders Boreham Wood but they have played a game more than Luke Garrard’s side.
A huge title boost
Jay has spent almost his entire career in the EFL and brings a wealth of experience and attacking quality into the final third for the Devonshire side moving into the remainder of the campaign.
Torquay already possess several high-quality players in their ranks including former Exeter City forward Ben Seymour, former Coventry midfielder Jordan Young and former Crystal Palace defender Dean Moxey.
The addition of Jay into their attack, will hopeful provide the club with goals and leadership higher up the pitch.
It remains to be seen as to whether Jay makes his debut for Torquay this weekend as they host Hampton & Richmond Borough.
