Gillingham released several players following the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign, and one of those has finally landed a new club.
Following the ending of the previous season, hundreds of players across English football found themselves without a club, which can lead to a lot of uncertainty as to where the next contract may come from.
The Gills on the other hand have had a strong start to their 2024/25 campaign in League Two, sitting fourth in the table with three wins from their opening five league matches, whilst also having the joint-best defence in the division.
However, following his departure in the summer – one of their former players has now found himself a new club.
Bonne Signs For Southend
As confirmed via a statement on the club’s website, National League side Southend United have clinched the signing of former Gillingham striker Macauley Bonne on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old has signed a one-year contract with the football club, with Southend also possessing a one-year option in their favour should he impress at Roots Hall this season.
Bonne links up with former Colchester United teammate George Moncur at the National League side.
How did he fare last season?
The forward began the 2023/24 campaign with Gillingham in League Two before making a temporary switch to Cambridge United in the third tier in January, helping them to avoid relegation for a second consecutive season.
With the Gills, Bonne made 31 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing two additional assists before his surprise loan move up to League One.
At Cambridge, he made an additional 16 outings and scored his only goal during a 1-1 draw against Charlton Athletic.
Bonne has signed in time to feature for Southend United during their National League home fixture against in-form Eastleigh on Tuesday evening.
