Everton make official approach for ex-Man Utd star likened to ‘Prime Gattuso’

Everton are being linked with a move for ex-Manchester United midfielder, Sofyan Amrabat. The Moroccan international spent the second half of last season on loan with the Red Devils but failed to earn himself a long-term contract.

The Toffees have been hamstrung by PSR issues over the last few years, but four new faces have arrived this summer. However, a disappointing start to the season has Sean Dyche still looking for his first league win of the campaign, so the arrival of a World Cup semi-finalist would certainly be welcomed by everyone at Goodison Park.

Everton interested in Sofyan Amrabat

Amrabat was far from convincing during his time with Man United last season starting just 10 Premier League games and averaging a WhoScored rating of 6.24. The midfielder has not yet navigated a way out of Fiorentina this summer, and with just one year left on his contract, he could be an opportunistic signing for someone.

Everton are one of two sides who are said to hold an interest in Amrabat this summer, with the other being Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce. While the Toffees are yet to make a formal bid for the midfielder, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that an initial approach has been made to the player.

The Toffees have already beefed out their midfield this summer with the signing of Tim Iroegbunam, although the loss of Amadou Onana can’t be underestimated. So, the experience and versatility of Amrabat would surely be too good for Everton to turn down, if the midfielder gave an indication he’d be willing to join.

Is Premier League redemption on the cards for Amrabat?

Amrabat was never fully accepted in the Premier League or at Old Trafford with his below-par performances failing to win people over. However, in a team that will dominate the ball far less than the Red Devils and able to show off his tough-tackling nature, the Moroccan midfielder could thrive in this Everton side.

Arguably, Amrabat’s best display for Man United came in their FA Cup final win against Manchester City. The Red Devils boasted just 26% possession, a game which suited Amrabat as he broke up play and bossed the midfield, just ‘like a prime Gattuso‘ according to Man United legend, Paul Scholes.

The Moroccan international has played the full 90 minutes in Fiorentina’s opening two games, so they’re certainly not forcing him out of the club. That’s likely to be bad news for the Toffees, as it’ll force them to perhaps pay a premium to get him to Goodison Park.

Something which may boost Everton’s hopes of landing Amrabat is that Fiorentina could entertain a loan deal. That is what Fenerbahce have offered the Italian side, so with a bigger mandatory buy clause in 12 months, Dyche could land his second midfielder signing of the summer.
