Exclusive: Lincoln City to Secure First January Signing

Lincoln City

League One Lincoln City have secured the signing of Oldham Athletic midfielder Sam Clucas sources have confirmed to The Deck.

The 34-year-old returns to his boyhood club that he left in 2009 as Michael Skubala looks to bolster to his young squad.

With over 200 Championship appearances and 66 in the Premier League, the former Hull City man brings a wealth of experience having previously been on the books of Rotherham United, Swansea City, Mansfield Town, and Chesterfield amongst others.

He linked up with Oldham Athletic in October 2024 following a period on the sidelines and become a key player for the Owls as they push for promotion from the National League.

However, the opportunity to once again link up with Lincoln City in League One has proved to be too good to turn down as the Imps beat off interest from Mansfield Town and Charlton Athletic to secure their man.

Lincoln City’s Young Squad

Lincoln have primarily focused on the signing of young “pre-peak” stars that have a significant resale value down the line. But that has come at the cost of perhaps some of the grit needed to pull themselves out of such a negative spiral. They surprised many by adding defender Darikwa in the summer, but he has proved himself to be one of the standout stars so far this campaign.

The Imps have struggled in recent weeks to take hold of the midfield in games, with the addition of Clucas sure to help with this.

Poor Run for the Imps

The Imps are on a run of just one win since October, which came against the 10-men of Reading. However, it is their lack of goals that has seriously impacted the side. They have only scored once (a penalty) in the last nine hours of football played. With rumours suggesting Freddie Draper is set to join Walsall, Rob Street already out on loan and Tyler Walker on the sidelines additions are needed quickly.

Michael Skubala has indicated that he wants a more experience head to help the young forward line but was realistic in his suggestions that it may be hard to do in the January window.
