Exeter City have joined two other League One sides in the race to sign midfielder Malachi Boateng after his stint with SPFL side Dundee came to an end.

The 21-year-old has returned to Crystal Palace following a loan stint with Scottish Premiership side Dundee during the 2023/24 campaign and could be set for a move into the English third tier next season.

The Grecians are keen to land the defensive midfielder this summer but are expected to face strong competition in their pursuit.

How did Boateng fare last season?

Boateng has spent both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons on loan in Scotland, featuring for both Queen’s Park and Dundee where he has experienced plenty of first-team football.

In the Scottish Premiership, Boateng made 32 appearances, contributing to one goal which came as an assist against Livingston during a 4-1 victory.

He also made four additional appearances in the Scottish League Cup, operating as both a centre-back and defensive midfielder for Dundee during his 36 outings.

Which other clubs are rivalling Exeter?

According to a report from journalist Alan Nixon, Exeter City will face competition from League One rivals Northampton Town and Stevenage for the midfielder’s signature.

Due to the midfielder being under contract at Crystal Palace, a fee is likely to be required by one of the League One side, although there has been no comment as to whether any of his former loan sides or indeed another SPFL side is also interested in the midfielder.

What could Boateng bring to Exeter?

As previously stated, Boateng is a versatile midfielder which will bolster Gary Caldwell’s options heading into the 2024/25 season if a move does materialise.

He has also enjoyed regular first-team football over the last two seasons which should allow him to make a smoother transition into his new team.
