League One Exeter City are still awaiting a response from former Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City midfielder Tom Carroll, after offering him a new deal.

The 32-year-old is out of contract this summer, after taking up the option of a one year deal with the Grecians at the beginning of the previous campaign. After a period on the sidelines the midfielder proved his fitness earning him a spot in the Exeter City squad.

The former England youth international appeared 45 times, scoring twice and assisting on three occasions for the League One side as they battled to a mid-table finish.

Carroll has previously had spells at Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Ipswich Town, Leyton Orient, Derby County and Aston Villa.

However, Carroll was a notable omission from the squad as they returned from their summer break as he mulls over a contract offer from Gary Caldwell’s side.

What has the Exeter City manager said?

In quotes provided by Devon Live, Caldwell admitted that they had made a new offer to the out of contract man;

“We’ve made an offer to Tom,”

“We’re in a kind of dialogue with Tom, so that’s ongoing, as loads of other situations are ongoing at the moment.”

“It’s that time of year where you’re speaking to lots of different players, but yeah, that’s currently ongoing.”

Will Carroll sign on for another year with the Grecians?

The decision to sign isn’t as easy as simply saying yes. The player’s family is based some distance away, so staying with the club would either mean he would have to spend more time away from them or move them closer.

The 32-year-old has admitted previously that he has enjoyed his spell with the side and I suspect he will be grateful to them for offering him a chance after missing an entire season (2022/2023) following his departure from Ipswich Town.

He has impressed since regaining his fitness, making more appearances this season than he had since the 2017/18 season for Swansea City in the Premier League.

There will likely be other suitors, and if one comes calling that will offer him the game time and is closer to home… it could tempt him to move.
