Fan Fights, Stadium Trespassing & A Referee Chase: Three Stories That Shocked The Weekend – Opinion

The football weekend just gone has been filled with thrills but sadly, three incidents poured negativity over the entire weekend.

We celebrated the joys of National League South side Maidstone United pulling off a shock FA Cup win against Championship highflyers Ipswich Town, Newport County almost producing a shock win over Manchester United and Manchester City finally scoring at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Black County Derby Briefly Suspended

Wolves fans appeared to be in the West Bromwich Albion end in their FA cup fixture, causing fights and police battles.

The Hawthorns was the venue where West Brom welcomed bitter rivals Wolves in a fierce and shocking clash overcome by crowd troubles.

After going 2-0 up in the 78th minute, a section of the West Brom stand had uproar and focus put on it after what appeared to be a large group of Wolves fans had tickets for the home end, resulting in fights between the two clubs and the game to be halted.

Stewards and police rushed to the situation, which took the best part of half an hour to cool down, diffusing some tension and escorting the disturbance out of the stadium. Shocking images have since been released, specifically of one fan whose head was entirely covered in blood.

The game was eventually resumed and the scoreline remained the same, with the premier league side taking the plaudits and claiming the bragging rights over their noisy neighbours.

Fan chases referee

Another event which caught the eye this weekend was at Vale Park where a home fan was not too happy with the officiating and decided to take matters into his own hands, by chasing the ref across the pitch.

This came after the referee gave the visitors, Portsmouth, a penalty in the dying moments of the game, resulting in Colby Bishop firing home to send the visitors away with a vital three points.

With these decisions being so important and every point at stake being so worthy, emotions are extremely high in these games, however, it will always remain unacceptable to enter the pitch, especially by running towards an individual.

The fan was quickly ushered off the pitch and the game finished 1-0 to the high flyers.

Breaking into a stadium

Finally, somehow a rogue Sheffield Wednesday fan managed to sneak into Coventry’s CBS Arena.

The fan filmed his quest inside the stadium which included him pouring and drinking a pint of Guinness strangely.

There is no more news on this story, however, I would imagine he was eventually found and assume he did not manage to watch the 1-1 draw between the two sides, which included a fine strike from debutant Victor Torp.
