FC United of Manchester Held As Promotion Rivals Battle In The Mud

Gainsborough Trinity were forced to settle for a point at Broadhurst Park after a battling 1-1 draw with FC United of Manchester, in a contest shaped as much by courage and controversy as by quality, writes Will Muxlow.

Fresh from their midweek win at Whitby Town, Russ Wilcox restored Aaron Simpson to the starting line up, with Ashton Offler alongside him at centre back. Jack Leckie was not risked after his precautionary withdrawal on Tuesday, while George Hornshaw returned to the midfield, partnering Jordan Helliwell.

It was an open start. Simpson and Sisa Tuntulwana combined well down the right to win an early corner, although a foul on Dan Atherton halted Trinity’s initial momentum. At the other end, David Robson was called into action inside five minutes, getting down sharply to his left to turn Charlie Ennis’ low effort behind after neat work from Michael Donohue and Matty Grivosti. Trinity stood firm from the resulting set pieces.

Robson’s authority continued as he bravely smothered at the feet of former Championship striker Adam Le Fondre, with Harrison Beeden clearing off the line before a late offside flag rendered it redundant. Jonny Margetts responded for the visitors, powering past his marker on the right but unable to pick out Helliwell with the final pass.

Midway through the half, Le Fondre showed his experience, turning smartly and forcing Robson into another fine save. Moments later, the 39-year-old hurled himself at a cross but could only glance wide under pressure from Offler.

The breakthrough arrived from a set piece. After Simpson was felled by debutant Matty Devine, Lewis Butroid delivered from a short-corner distance. Tuntulwana’s header struck the far post and Beeden reacted quickest, stabbing home to spark celebrations among the travelling Trinity support.

Le Fondre remained a threat, heading wide before the break, but Trinity reached half time ahead.

The hosts began the second half with renewed intent. Le Fondre spun and fired narrowly wide, then tempers flared when Donohue bundled Robson off the pitch as the goalkeeper gathered a routine ball. After a brief melee, Robson and Grivosti were cautioned.

Trinity’s resistance was eventually broken after a disrupted passage of play following an injury to substitute Javelle Clarke. With confusion lingering, Le Fondre struck the equaliser to level the contest.

From there, the match became increasingly frenetic on a deteriorating surface. Frank Mulhern was denied by the pitch itself when clean through, while Margetts could not convert from a tight angle after latching onto a loose back pass. Preston later saw a free kick blocked, and Robson continued to excel, holding firm from distance and at close range.

In the closing stages, Williams rounded Atherton but saw his effort held up in the mud, summing up an afternoon where conditions played their part. Despite late pressure from both sides, neither could find a winner.

An entertaining, if chaotic, encounter ended honours even, with both teams left to regroup quickly ahead of their next fixtures.
