Tranmere Rovers are currently the lowest scorers in the entirety of the English Football League let alone League Two and things need to change if they are going to climb back up the table, but which players could they target in January?
So far this season, Tranmere have managed just ten league goals from their first 14 matches, currently averaging 0.7 goals per 90 minutes and have created just 16 big chances which is 26 less than Walsall who lead the way at the top of that particular area.
The Deck’s Callum spoke to fellow writer and Tranmere Rovers supporter Jack Walton who suggested that a goal-scoring striker (preferably with experience) is top of his shopping list if he were in charge of their winter recruitment.
Judging by their lack of goals, it would be hard to disagree with Jack’s comments, although their lack of chance creations suggests that the problem may not solely be with the strikers and more with the players behind them – especially with last season’s loan star Rob Apter no longer being with the club.
Therefore, here are five possible attacking reinforcements that Tranmere Rovers should target this summer…
Connor Parsons: Free agent
Parsons is a familiar face to those who follow either Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City or Solihull Moors from his previous stints in English football before spending the last two years with Irish Premiership side Waterford.
The 24-year-old is currently out of contract with the Irish side and would be available for a smaller compensation fee – opening the door to a potential return to England. He contributed to six goals during the 2024 campaign, operating as a winger/wing-back but possesses the ability to play as a number ten too.
Parsons has EFL experience and would help to improve the chance creation and depth within the final third and given how cheap a deal is likely to be – a side like Tranmere should be all over it, despite myself recently suggesting some National League clubs could land him.
Ciaran McGuckin: Rotherham United
Unlike Parsons, McGuckin is a striker and has recently returned to the Millers following his stint on loan with National League side Yeovil Town, where he managed three goals in six matches and recently made his League One debut against Barnsley.
The 20-year-old managed 1.5 successful dribbles, 4.8 duel wins and 1.7 shots per game during his short stint with Yeovil Town and became a popular figure amongst the club’s supporters.
Although he isn’t the “experienced” type – McGuckin’s ability in the final third would certainly help to strengthen Tranmere’s attack. He’s a striker who brings a lot of energy to his performances and enjoys running in behind defences, which would create a real danger for opponents Tranmere for me, should be asking the question in January.
Josh Stones: Wigan Athletic
Unlike McGuckin, a striker that could be available on a permanent deal in January is Wigan Athletic striker Josh Stones who is currently on loan at National League side Oldham Athletic, although that move is set to come to an end at the start of the New Year.
The 21-year-old has contributed to two goals in his first three matches in all competitions so far since returning to Boundary Park and journalist Alan Nixon reported recently that Stones was open to a permanent exit away from Wigan Athletic in order to receive regular game time.
Stones possesses a strong, physical presence up front, with the ability to lead the line and get in behind when required. On a permanent contract, Stones could bring a lot of quality into the forward line for the football club, moving into the second half of the season.
Chris Conn-Clarke: Peterborough United
As highlighted with Parsons, it isn’t just strikers that should be on Tranmere’s shortlist this January and one name that should come into consideration is Peterborough United’s Chris Conn-Clarke on loan for the remainder of the campaign.
Conn-Clarke contributed to a draw-dropping 35 goals in 47 matches for National League side Altrincham last season as they made the play-offs before joining Posh for an undisclosed fee in the summer. However, he’s struggled with an injury since joining and has limited first-team football which could place him on the loan list.
The 22-year-old has made several appearances for Northern Ireland’s U21s and could be tempted to head out on loan in order to boost his chances of receiving a first-team call up. He can operate as a left-winger or attacking midfielder, adding plenty of versatility to Tranmere’s attack.
Max Biamou: Free agent
Completing the list is a current free agent who ended the 2023/24 season in League Two with Doncaster Rovers and has promotion-winning experience in the form of French striker Max Biamou.
The 34-year-old won promotion twice with Coventry City and is a former teammate of captain Tom Davies and Declan Drysdale and contributed to three goals in seven appearances in League Two last season.
Biamou is a target man, who’s good at holding the ball up and bringing wide players or his strike partner into the game, which would benefit Tranmere given they operate with a 4-4-2 system.
Tranmere Rovers fans, would you take any of these players at your club in January?
