Five Biggest Transfers In The Premier League So Far

Liverpool vs Everton

It’s been another summer transfer window full of high profile, big money moves. The window is still open for Premier League clubs until Monday 1st September. From £100 million deals to same league transfers, we take a look at the five biggest moves in the Premier League so far.

1) Florian Wirtz – Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool – £100 million plus add-ons

First up on this list is the most expensive transfer this summer, Florian Wirtz. The German has set Liverpool back £100 million. The Reds new number seven will be looking to bring his exciting Leverkusen form to Anfield this season. Wirtz accumulated a combined 67 goal contributions in his last two seasons in Germany.

The 22 year old will bring attacking flair and end product to an already dangerous Liverpool front line. With his dazzling feet and inch-perfect through balls, the likes of Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo will be licking their lips whenever Wirtz gets on the ball. It’s been somewhat of an underwhelming start to his Liverpool career, with two appearances and no goal contributions so far.

2) Hugo Ekitike – Eintracht Frankfurt to Liverpool – £79 million plus add-ons

Next up on this list is another Liverpool signing, Hugo Ekitike. The 23 year old Frenchman moved to Anfield after scoring 22 times and assisting 12 in 48 appearances last season for Frankfurt. Ekitike signed for French giants PSG in the summer of 2022. However, this move proved too much too soon for the young striker. Eight goal contributions in 32 appearances lead to a loan and then permanent move to Frankfurt. This allowed him to hone his craft in the German top flight with less pressure on his young shoulders.

A smooth and elegant dribbler at six foot three inches, the Frenchman has earned comparisons to compatriot Thierry Henry.  Ekitike is also a killer in front of goal. The striker has hit the ground running at Anfield, scoring twice and assisting once in two appearances so far.

Liverpool look to have found the missing piece to their striker jigsaw.

3) Joao Pedro – Brighton and Hove Albion to Chelsea – £60 million

Next up on this list is the first non-Liverpool signing, Joao Pedro. The 23 year old signed for Chelsea just in time for the Club World Cup, where he hit the ground running. The Brazilian scored twice in the Semi-finals and once in the final to announce himself to the Chelsea faithful.

Pedro netted 10 times and assisted six in 27 appearances in the Premier League last season. He is capable of playing both at striker and as a 10, but will be mainly used up front by Enzo Maresca. The Brazilian will bring flair and clinical finishing to Stamford Bridge, something they have dearly missed for years now.

4) Bryan Mbuemo – Brentford to Manchester United – £65 million plus add-ons

The penultimate player on this list is Bryan Mbuemo. The Frenchman made the move from London to Manchester for £65 million. The winger will be looking to bring his 27 goal contributions in the Premier League last season to Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim will deploy the Cameroon international in a wide 10 position. This allows Mbuemo to be closer to goal, where he can damage the opposition the most. His clinical finishing, strength and intelligence will help United vastly improve on last seasons dismal 16th placed finish. United fans will be hoping Mbeumo carries the form that made the club splash nearly £70 million on him.

5) Viktor Gyokeres – Sporting Lisbon to Arsenal – £55 million plus add-ons

We end this list with the most anticipated transfer this summer, Viktor Gyokeres. On the surface level, this seems to be a bargain of a signing from the Gunners. The Swede has scored 97 goals in his last 102 appearances. After three successive second placed finishes, Arteta looks to have added the final piece to his title jigsaw.

Arsenal have been crying out for an out and out striker for a few years now. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have all tried and failed to cement their place as a clinical striker in an Arsenal side that creates chances like there’s no tomorrow. Gyokeres will be looking to bring his ridiculous scoring record to the Emirates as they look to end their trophy drought this season. The only question marks looming is will the Swedish international get the same level of chances as he did in Portugal and will he be able to live up to the pressure and expectations.
