League Two has been potentially one of the most exciting leagues in football at the moment. Just 5 points separate 1st and 4th, and there’s a massive 11 teams just 8 points or less off promotion playoffs spots.
With this competition, comes extremely talented players. And with so many talented teams, and quality players set to miss out on potential promotion, there are many players who in the summer, may look to move onto pastures new. Here are five such players.
Player One: Ronan Curtis, AFC Wimbledon, LW/RW
He came. He saw. He scored against hated rivals MK Dons. Ronan Curtis has been nothing short of a revelation for the Dons, joining after recovering from a long-term injury sustained while at Portsmouth.
He was an absolute coup for Wimbledon, scoring 3 goals and getting 1 assist in 8 games, making a goal involvement every second game.
Wimbledon will be keen to try to tie him down long-term, having only signed a short-term deal until the summer. Curtis may be keen to return to League One, where he scored 12 goals and got 5 assists in his best season with Portsmouth.
Player Two: Callum Hendry, Salford City, ST
The Scottish striker has had a solid season and a half at Salford, scoring an impressive 12 goals and getting 5 assists in the 22/23 season. He’s followed up with 6 goals and 1 assist in 17 games so far this season, albeit in a Salford team sitting largely stagnant in 19th place, with little chance of relegation, and little chance at promotion.
Promotion-chasing Stockport County were interested in the striker in January. Considering the dearth of number 9s in footballing as a whole, there may be many more interested in his services if he leaves on a free transfer.
Player Three: Warren O’Hora, MK Dons, CB/RB
The Irish defender has been an important part of the MK Dons defence since joining from Brighton, initially on loan, and later on an undisclosed permanent deal.
O’Hora was one of the few MK Dons players to come through the relegation campaign of 22/23 with much credit, and his injury in January of that season was a major part of their eventual relegation.
O’Hora has admitted he’s at the “crunch time in my career”, and may look to move upwards if MK Dons fail to do so.
Player Four: Elliot Watt, Salford City, CDM/CM
It’s hard to argue with 15 assists in the League in the 22/23 season. Watt followed up with 1 goal and 6 assists so far this season, and alongside Hendry, will likely be one interesting more competitive League Two teams, or even League One teams.
Championship high-flyers Ipswich Town were reportedly interested in the Scotsman back in March 2023, and given his creativity and ability to assist from the middle of the pitch, there would be few teams who would turn him down.
Salford likely have work on their hands to keep the player, who’s only 23 but likely has aspirations to move upwards.
Player Five: James McClean, Wrexham AFC, LW/LWB
Out of contract in the summer, albeit with a year optional extension held by the club, the often controversial Irishman is also an effective EFL operator with experience to match.
He’s performed well in a stacked Wrexham squad, getting a 7.13 average rating over 28 league games, including 2 goals and 5 assists.
Wrexham may choose to stick with the Veteran, be it League One or League Two. If not, there would be many teams who could use the Irishman’s ability and experience. Perhaps not his wages mind.
