Fleetwood Town have rejected bids from two League One clubs for defender Brendan Wiredu as the end of the transfer window creeps closer.

Fleetwood Town have rejected bids of £500,000 and £650,000 from Wycombe Wanderers and an unnamed club for Brendan Wiredu, who has started and captained every game this season.

Wiredu has captained Charlie Adam’s side this season, helping Fleetwood pick up five points from their first three games in the League, scoring in a 2-2 draw against Notts County.

How did Wiredu fare last season?

Wiredu was part of the Fleetwood squad that was relegated to League Two last season, narrowly missing out on survival by three points. However, the defender was one of the bright sparks in the Cods’ side, being named the League One Player of the Season by the North West Football Awards.

Wiredu was a pivotal part of Fleetwood’s side, playing 36 times in the League, scoring three goals and assisting two, and becoming captain in the second half of the season.

The 24-year-old also stood out at the back, averaging the most tackles (2.7) and interceptions (1.8) per game for Fleetwood in the League.

While Wiredu was a prominent and key figure in the League, he struggled to make as much of an impact in cup competitions, playing only three of seven matches.

Despite relegation, Wiredu had a good season for the Cods. He played 39 times in all competitions, scoring three and assisting two. His performances for Wiredu last season and this season could be why League One clubs are bidding for the defender.

League One bids rejected for Wiredu.

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Fleetwood Town have rejected bids from Wycombe Wanderers and an unnamed club for Brendan Wiredu.

The defender has also had previous interest from Championship trio Derby County, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle, but the report also stated Fleetwood are ‘determined’ to keep hold of the defender.

The Fleetwood captain signed a contract in January, keeping him at the club until 2026. This means the Cods may not be pressured to sell one of their star players, as they wouldn’t risk losing him for free in the summer.

It could be an interesting end to Fleetwood’s window. With the deadline approaching, we could see more bids for Wiredu come in from League One clubs.
