Fleetwood Town Star Chased By Championship Trio

Fleetwood Town star Brendan Wiredu is a wanted man, with the defender attracting plenty of Championship interest as the end of the transfer window creeps ever closer.

The defender played almost every game for Fleetwood Town in League One over the past two seasons but could find himself leaving the football club this month.

Wiredu was made captain of Fleetwood and has played a pivotal role under manager Charlie Adam which is likely to explain the interest in his services.

How did Wiredu fare last season?

Last season, Wiredu’s statistics made for an interesting reading as he sat in the top one percentile for interceptions, averaging 2.22 per 90 and 2.61 tackles per 90 which puts him in the top seven percentile in the category.

Wiredu managed five goal contributions for Fleetwood Town last season, which suggests that despite their relegation, he stood out and can deliver in both boxes.

He also played over 3,000 minutes of football, providing that he can remain fit and reliable rather than having injury-prone attributes.

Who is Brendan Wiredu?

The defender began his career at League One side Charlton Athletic but failed to make an impact with the club and was instead loaned out to both Bromley and Colchester, before signing for the latter and going on to make 58 appearances.

In 2022, he joined his current club Fleetwood and has racked up 73 appearances with 12 goal contributions.

In January of this year, a new two-and-a-half-year deal was agreed at Fleetwood, after winning multiple Player of the Month awards.

At a recent fans forum, Adam had this to say about his captain…

“I brought in Brendan as captain when I came into the football club, I don’t want to speak too much into it but he is the one who sets the tone.

“He represents the football club and how we want to model ourselves, his attitude from day one when I spoke to him has been impeccable, as a captain and as a leader he is the type of person you want representing our football club.”

Which clubs are interested in him?

According to a report from Football Insider, Championship trio Oxford United, Derby County and Plymouth Argyle are all chasing the defender’s signature before the summer window closes.

It is unclear as to whether Fleetwood would be open to a sale or the fee that it would take, but this is certainly a transfer that could be of interest as the end of the window creeps closer.
