Fleetwood Town winger Phoenix Patterson is reportedly closing in on a permanent move to League One side Stevenage this summer.
The 24-year-old played a key role for Pete Wild’s side last season, contributing double figures for goal contributions despite Fleetwood failing to make the play-off places.
However, those individual performances have warranted interest from clubs in higher divisions and it appears as though one of them could be closing in on a permanent move for the winger this summer.
Fleetwood winger linked with exit
As reported by journalist Alan Nixon, Fleetwood Town winger Phoenix Patterson is the subject of heavy interest from League One outfit Stevenage, ahead of a possible summer transfer.
The 24-year-old is reportedly the subject of a potential £200,000 move to the League One side but there has been no confirmation as to whether that bid has been officially submitted or whether a deal has been agreed.
According to Nixon, Patterson is expected to replace Aaron Pressley who’s set to depart the League One side this summer with Walsall leading the race to sign him.
How did he fare last season?
After contributing to six goals in League One last season, Patterson opted to stay with Fleetwood Town during the summer and it was a decision that certainly paid off.
Across all competitions, Patterson made 45 appearances for Fleetwood Town, scoring three goals but providing 11 assists, taking his overall total to double figures.
He largely operated on the left-hand side for Fleetwood last season, either as a winger or wing-back.
Is this a beneficial move for Patterson?
With Patterson being a natural winger and Pete Wild’s side often utilising a back three/five system, you could argue that the 24-year-old is fitted into Fleetwood’s system rather than one that’s built around him.
Therefore, he may have wanted to move on in the sense of finding a club in which their system/style of play best suits his.
Stevenage haven’t appeared to have settled on one direct system, but a lot of the ones they have used have operated with wide-midfielders/wingers rather than wing-backs, which would maximise Patterson’s qualities.
A six-figure fee for Fleetwood would help them improve in other areas which in turn could boost their own promotion chances in League Two next season.
He’s also proven previously that he’s more than capable of playing well in the third tier, meaning this could be a very good transfer.
