Recently relegated Luton Town have announced their retained list with 14 players set to leave the club.
Matt Bloomfield has been ruthless going into the summer window, opting to clear out his squad amid the club undergoing consecutive relegations.
The club have indicated that further discussions surrounding the future of those under contract are ongoing, and the Hatters have triggered further years in Jack Walton and Liam Walsh’s contracts.
This indicates a summer of change as he looks to get the club back on an upward trajectory after the club were recently relegated back to League One only one year after competing in the Premier League.
A Club Legend’s Departure
With 14 names departing Kenilworth Road, one of the standouts is club legend Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.
The midfielder joined the club in the National League in 2014 and made 405 appearances throughout Luton’s remarkable rise to the Premier League.
Winning four promotions throughout his time at Kenilworth Road, Mpanzu became the first player to represent the same club in England’s top five divisions – a record that may never be broken.
The news will not come as a surprise to Hatters fans, as the midfielder played his last minutes in a Luton Town shirt away at Oxford United in January, before being loaned out to Rotherham United for the remainder of the season.
Luton have stated that “further tribute to Pelly and his achievements will follow” amid their legend’s departure.
Players released:
Dion Pereira, Jack Bateson, Dominic Dos Santos Martins, Tyrell Giwa, Alex Piesold, Tim Krul, Jameson Horlick, Victor Moses, Charlie Emery, Isaiah Harvey, Cai Hockey. Matthew Takawira.
Time for change at Luton Town
Matt Bloomfield will be keen to build a squad in his image to ensure Luton make an immediate return to the Championship.
And having released fourteen players, it still feels that there could be a number of outgoings yet to come as the club continues discussions with individuals surrounding their futures.
As it stands, the club still have a number of their star players who lifted promotion from the Championship two years ago.
With the likes of Carlton Morris, Jordan Clark, and Elijah Adebayo still under contract, the summer window could be an intriguing one as Luton prepare for life in League One.
