The future of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has been a topic of debate amid a downturn in form over the last couple of seasons.

Porto first-choice stopper Diogo Costa has been heavily linked with the Citizens in recent times but it will take a hefty fee to acquire the Portuguese player.

The 25-year-old is a good goalkeeper but has yet to play in one of Europe’s top leagues and there may be more cost-efficient options.

The Deck picks out three potential alternative options to the Porto star.

Three Potential New First Choice Keepers For Manchester City

Mike Maignan – AC Milan

The French goalkeeper has been first-choice for eight consecutive campaigns for AC Milan and Lille.

He has been particularly impressive in the Champions League where only four goalkeepers have made more saves than him.

Maignan guided AC Milan to a 13th-place finish in the Champions League, nine spots ahead of Manchester City.

The 29-year-old has been first-choice for France in recent times, having been an ever-present in the Nations League and European Championships in 2024.

AC Milan’s captain was a key component of the Scudetto-winning squad in 2022 and with just a year left on his contract from this summer, there is a possibility that Manchester City could pick up a world-class goalkeeper for a cut-price fee.

Lucas Perri – Olympique Lyon

The 27-year-old Ligue 1 shot-stopper once joined Crystal Palace on loan in 2019 for six months but did not make an appearance for the Eagles.

He has developed into a top-class goalkeeper since becoming first-choice this season. Perri would be a shrewd option should Manchester City and Pep Guardiola decide to monitor his progress between now and the end of the campaign.

The Brazilian’s reactions are first-class and only one goalkeeper has made more saves within the six-yard box in this season’s Europa League.

It has been a difficult campaign at times for Lyon but Perri has been a consistent performer and there are very few goalkeepers in Europe with his shot-stopping ability at present.

The fee required to acquire his services would likely be just a fraction of what it would cost to secure the services of Costa or Maignan.

Bart Verbruggen – Brighton

Another option is a little closer to home for Manchester City with 22-year-old Brighton goalkeeper Verbruggen having the advantage of Premier League experience.

The former Anderlecht number one has kept 14 clean sheets in 54 matches for the Seagulls and made five saves as his current employers beat Manchester City 2-1 earlier this season.

He is the current Netherlands number one and was ever-present in their run to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, keeping two clean sheets and conceding just five goals in six matches.

There is scope for improvement, however, as Verbruggen has made four errors leading to goals in the Premier League in 2024/25.

At just 22 years old there is plenty of time for development on his concentration and he has the potential to become a key component of Pep’s rebuild at Manchester City.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the Brighton player amid their issues in this area and it appears only a matter of time before one of the top clubs in the country comes in for the goalkeeper.
