AC Milan are one of the most famous and successful football clubs in the world. Milan are the third most successful club in Italian football, with 19 Scudetti, and have won the second most European cups, with seven titles.

However, despite their rich history, Milan have found success hard to come by in recent years and have won the Scudetto just once in the last decade and have not won the Champions League for nearly 20 years.

Their last league title came in the 2021/22 season as they secured their 19th championship with a 3-0 away win against Sassuolo. So, where are Milan’s starting 11 from that day now?

Where Are the AC Milan Scudetto Winners From 2021/22 Now?

Manager: Stefano Pioli

Stefano Pioli ended the club’s 11-year wait for the Scudetto. The Italian manager joined the club in October 2019 and was in charge for almost five years. He departed Milan following a poor season in 2023/24.

Pioli now finds himself in Saudi Arabia where he manages Al Nassr although a return to Italy has been rumoured and the 59-year-old has been linked with a move to Juventus.

Mike Maignan

Mike Maignan was between the sticks for Milan against Sassuolo in 2022. The club signed him from LOSC Lille in the summer of 2021 as a replacement for Gianluigi Donnaruma, who was set to join Paris Sanit-Germian.

The Frenchman had an impressive debut season, keeping 17 clean sheets in the league, including one on the final day against Sassuolo to help secure the league title.

Maignan remains at Milan today, where he is now captain, and has made over 150 appearances for the club.

Theo Hernandez

Theo Hernandez joined the Rossoneri from Real Madrid in 2019 and, like fellow Frenchman Mike Maignan, remains with the club today and has made over 250 appearances.

So far this season Hernandez has played 38 games in all competitions, scoring four goals and recording five assists.

Fikayo Tomori

The next player from Milan’s team that day is Fikayo Tomori. The Englishman joined Milan from Chelsea in 2021 for £24 million after they exercised an option to buy following a successful loan spell.

In his first full season with Milan, he was pivotal to their success, playing 31 league games in their title-winning season. He is also still at the San Siro but has found himself down the pecking order currently, with consistent first-team minutes hard to come by.

He has made just 14 appearances in Serie A this season and has not played a full 90 minutes since the Derby della Madonnina in February.

Pierre Kalulu

The first of Milan’s Scudetto-winning side of three years ago is Tomori’s centre-back partner, Pierre Kalulu. The defender joined the Rossoneri from Lyon in 2020 following the expiration of his contract with the French side.

After four years with the club, he has since moved on and now finds himself in Turin with Juventus. Kalulu signed for the Bianconeri on a one-year loan deal in the summer. Kalulu has made 31 appearances for Juventus this season.

Davide Calabria

On the right side of the defence against Sassuolo was Davide Calabria. The Italian came through Milan’s academy and stayed with the club for 18 years. He was made captain at the beginning of the 2022/23 season.

However, his nearly two-decade stay with the club ended in February and he left Milan to join fellow Serie A side Bologna, where he has made five appearances.

Sandro Tonali

Sandro Tonali joined Milan permanently from Brescia Calcio in 2021 following a successful loan spell with the club. He became a pivotal part of Milan’s midfield and made over 130 appearances during his time with the Rossoneri.

After reaching the Champions League semi-final with the club in 2023, Tonali departed Milan to join Premier League side Newcastle United. The midfielder was sold for a reported fee of £55 million, making him the most expensive Italian player of all time.

Despite a difficult start due to a 10-month ban as a result of betting breaches, Tonali has gone on to make 46 appearances and has become a key player for the Magpies.

Franck Kessie

The scorer of AC Milan’s third goal that day was midfielder Franck Kessie. Kessie was the Rossoneri’s second signing of the summer in 2017 and joined on an initial two-year loan deal, with an obligation to buy, from fellow Serie A side Atalanta.

The Ivorian would go on to make 223 appearances for Milan, scoring 37 goals, before joining Barcelona on a free transfer in 2022. After one year with Barcelona, Kessie joined Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli, where he has made 65 appearances and scored 12 goals.

Rade Krunic

Bosnian midfielder Rade Krunic joined Milan from Empoli in the summer of 2019 for a rumoured fee of €8 million plus bonuses. He scored three goals across four-and-a-half years at the San Siro and left in January 2024 to join Turkish side Fenerbahce on loan.

After an initial loan spell, an obligation to buy was exercised and he joined the 28-time Turkish champions permanently in July 2024, before joining Red Star Belgrade in September. He has played 23 games for the Serbian side, scoring four times.

Rafael Leao

Perhaps the most well-known name on this list is Rafael Leao. The Portuguese winger is still at Milan now and joined the club from Lille in 2019 for a reported fee of €35 million.

He has since made well over 250 appearances for the Rossoneri and has become widely regarded as one of the most talented forwards in Europe. So far this season, the 25-year-old has made 39 appearances, scoring 10 goals and registering nine assists.

Alexis Saelemakers

On the other flank is Belgian winger Alexis Saelemakers. He initially joined on loan from Anderlecht in January 2020 but his stay was made permanent at the end of the 20/21 season.

In August 2023, he joined Bologna on loan before briefly returning to Milan. One year later, he joined AS Roma on loan for the season where he has impressed with some brilliant performances. Saelemakers has scored six goals in 24 games for the Giallorossi this season.

Olivier Giroud

Finally, the goalscoring hero from that day, Olivier Giroud. The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker scored a brace on the final day of the 21/22 campaign, taking his total to 14 goals in Serie A that season.

He joined Milan from Chelsea in July 2021 and made over 130 appearances for the club, scoring 49 goals. He now plays his football in America for Los Angeles FC, where he has scored twice in 25 games.
