Championship West Bromwich Albion have made an enquiry to relegated Huddersfield Town in an attempt to secure one of their stars.
The second-tier side are reportedly keen to add Welsh forward Sorba Thomas to their ranks, with current Baggies manager Corberan having a previous relationship with the player. However, they face competition from French side Nantes.
The Ligue 1 side were hopeful of signing the player for an approximate £1 million fee, but the interest from West Brom could impact their intentions, as the player could favour a move to play for a more familiar manager.
According to Alan Nixon, Carlos Corberan’s side are not willing to pay the asking price despite their willingness to conclude a deal.
Can the Baggies win the race?
At the moment it is looking unlikely, unless they are willing to at least match their French counterparts. Corberan signed the player from Boreham Wood in 2021 so will have a good relationship with Thomas already. The Welshman may even favour a move to the Championship club, but if they are not prepared to match the fee, then its a simple case of economics. Highest bidder wins.
The Terriers also hold the cards, as the player has a contract until 2026, meaning they are not at risk of losing him for free any time soon.
Thomas has made 125 appearances for Huddersfield Town, scoring seven goals and providing an impressive 31 assists during his time at the club. The 25-year-old has also had spells at Boreham Wood, making 86 appearances for Luke William’s side and also a brief spell on loan at Blackburn Rovers where he made 17 appearances.
He also has eight international caps to his name, having made his debut in October 2021 against the Czech Republic. Most of his appearances have come from the bench, with only three starts. His last call up was in March 2023.
