Former Cardiff City Loanee Set For Championship Switch

CARDIFF CITY

Former Cardiff City loanee Sivert Mannsverk is looking increasingly likely to complete a summer switch to Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a permanent contract.

The 23-year-old has been handed the green light to leave Dutch giants Ajax on a permanent deal this summer and after his six month stint in South Wales, he now looks set to remain in English football.

Nothing has been agreed yet but the process is underway according to reports on Tuesday afternoon.

Former Cardiff loanee heading for Championship stay

As confirmed by Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, Blackburn Rovers are in talks to sign midfielder Sivert Mannsverk from Ajax on a permanent contract this summer.

The 23-year-old looks increasingly likely to end his two-year spell in the Netherlands this summer and now looks to be extending his stay in English football.

No figures or contract lengths have been reported currently, but the midfielder is under contract in the Netherlands until June 2028 implying that a fee is going to be required for this deal to get over the line.

How did he fare last season?

The Norwegian has struggled for first-team minutes since arriving in the Netherlands, making just 13 league appearances during the 2023/24 season and that decreased during the previous campaign.

During the first half of the campaign, Mannsverk registered just five appearances across all competitions and failed to contribute to a goal, prompting his January exit.

He completed a loan move to then-Championship side Cardiff City who were fighting at the wrong end of the standings but he did add a contribution to his total.

Across his time in England, Mannsverk made 15 appearances with his only assist coming against… Blackburn Rovers in March.

Did he do enough at Cardiff to justify a Championship stay?

Assessing Mannsverk‘s time at Cardiff City is slightly misleading to an extend when you consider he was already struggling for minutes and confidence, and joined a side that were equally low in confidence.

Therefore, there is an argument to say that Cardiff wasn’t the right move for the midfielder to begin with.

However, the positive to take from his stint with the Bluebirds is that from his 14 league appearances, 12 of them were starts and he seemingly stood up well to the physicality of the Championship which is a positive.

Blackburn struggled significantly during the second half of the season and are in need of quality and depth to their ranks, which Mannsverk would provide.

His spell at Cardiff showed plenty of glimpses and positives in regards to the midfielder and if the financial side of the deal is suitable, it could be a very sensible addition.
