Former Coventry City Defender Todd Kane and ex-Aberdeen captain Anthony Stewart have both signed for National League strugglers Ebbsfleet United on a free transfer as per the club X account.
Who are they?
Todd Kane came through the Chelsea Academy however never made an appearance for the Blues and went on to make over 180 Championship appearances playing for Coventry City, Hull City, Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers whilst also having stints abroad with NEC Nijmegen and Groningen in the Eredivisie and a short spell in Gibraltar with Manchester 62. However, most recently he joined Stockport County in March 2024 and helped Stockport County win promotion to Sky Bet League One before being released. Todd Kane was also named in the PFA Pre-season side whilst in search for a new club.
Anthony Stewart came through Wycombe Wanderers’ youth system and made over 250 appearances for Wycombe over two stints and helped Wycombe achieve promotion to the Championship with a goal in their 3-0 Play-Off final win against Oxford United. He would leave Wycombe Wanderers two seasons later to sign for Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen and was made club captain however he made just 21 appearances and had two loan spells at MK Dons before being released at the end of last season.
How will they fit into Ebbsfleet?
Ebbsfleet United are currently bottom of the National League and have picked up just 5 points in their opening 2 games which has led them to change their manager already as Danny Searle was relieved of his duties on the 12th of September after 7 games and was replaced by former Rangers and Queens Park Rangers coach Harry Watling 3 days later, however in his 4 games in charge Ebbsfleet have conceded 7 goals in 4 games and a total of 25 goals in 12 games which is the most of any side in the National League.
Therefore Harry Watling has looked for more defensive options and has landed Todd Kane and Anthony Stewart in order to improve their defensive record and help them climb off the bottom of the table.
