Former Lincoln City forward Anthony Scully’s future at Championship side Portsmouth is ‘uncertain’, according to a report by The News (Portsmouth).
John Mousinho’s side lifted the League One title last season beating out the likes of Derby County and Bolton Wanderers to the top spot. Despite enjoying a successful campaign, Anthony Scully struggled to make an impact as injuries significantly disrupted his spell at the club.
The dynamic winger only made six league appearances, without scoring as he was out of action between August and December, then again between January and the end of the season. The Irishman has struggled to replicate his electric form since leaving Sincil Bank, where he contributed 37 goals in 106 appearances as well as contributing 19 assists. He also had a brief spell at Wigan Athletic but failed to make more than a handful of appearances and was often left out of the squad completely as they were relegated from the Championship.

That depends a lot on his injury recovery. Few clubs will be willing to take the risk after less than 15 appearances over the last two years and near back-to-back serious injuries. Portsmouth will more than likely hope to get him off the books as a transfer that didn’t go to plan. He has talent in abundance but whether he can force his way back into the squad in League One was a question that needed to be answered, never mind in the Championship. Mousinho will want to utilise every penny of his squad to ensure they are competitive, hoping to follow the route of Ipswich Town back to the top flight, rather than battle against a potential relegation.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him shipped out on loan to a lower-end League One or higher League Two club to regain his fitness then they can reassess in January before his contract runs out at the end of next year. It is a shame that Lincoln City are following a different model, because a return would suit the player perfectly.
