Former Newcastle United Man Becomes Free Agent After National League Stint

Former Newcastle United forward Rolando Aarons has become a free agent after departing National League strugglers Morecambe.

The 30-year-old arrived at the Lancashire club back in September and had become a semi-regular under former manager Ashvir Singh Johal, making 16 appearances.

Club Confirms Exit

Morecambe revealed Aarons’ exit from the National League club on their website, stating that his contract had expired with the relegation contenders.

The former Wycombe Wanderers striker last played for the Shrimps back in December during their match away at rivals Carlisle United, but has since been absent from matchday squads.

Across his 13 appearances in the league, Aarons failed to notch a goal or assist for the club, having finally made the switch back to England after a stint in Croatia with NK Celje.

He had over a year on the free agent market, in which time he entered trials for Dinamo Tbilisi, and spent the summer training with the PFA’s out-of-contract squads before being picked up by Morecambe.

Aarons spent the best part of a decade at St. James’ Park, but saw frequent loan moves before ultimately being sold to Huddersfield Town in 2021.

Move Never Worked

While it was a promising move for Morecambe at a time when they needed to find a new spark to kickstart their revival under new ownership, Rolando Aarons’ move cannot go down as anything but a failure.

The past couple of years have been tough as a whole for the club, but under Ashvir Singh Johal they looked largely wayward and that has reflected in their league table position with just Gateshead below them in the National League.

It is still early days in Jim Bentley’s attempt to rescue the Shrimps from a second successive relegation, and he must try and find a fresh option on the market with how poor their attacking prowess has been.

Aarons Back On The Market

For the former Newcastle United man, this move has got him back to England and playing some regular football, which may entice teams deep in non-league to try and sign him as a free agent.

The forward has never been a prolific goalscorer across his career, but given his past experiences in the EFLand international football, a side in step two or three may take a punt on a former Premier League footballer.
