Former Newport County Boss Set To Be Appointed League Two Manager

League Two News

Former Newport County, Walsall and Swindon Town boss Michael Flynn is set to be appointed the new manager of recently relegated League Two side Cheltenham Town, according to Gloucester Live.

Reports broke over the last few days that the 43-year-old was under consideration to become the new boss of Cheltenham Town following the departure of Darrell Clarke to Barnsley at the end of the season. Newly appointed Director of Football Gary Johnson (father of Lee Johnson) was tasked with the job of replacing the departing manager with the statement released upon his appointment confirming “His first task is to help the board identify and recruit a new first team manager following the departure of Darrell Clarke to Barnsley yesterday afternoon.”

It has taken the new man just four days to identify and appoint Michael Flynn, who has been out of work since Swindon Town opted to sack him in January.

How had Michael Flynn’s season gone?

Flynn was perhaps hard done by, he was dealt with the impossible task of rebuilding a club that is down on its luck, fighting restrictions and behind-the-scenes drama with a squad of players that weren’t his first choice. Despite all this, he successfully started the season with an impressive unbeaten streak in the league before their form dropped dramatically in the latter half of his tenure.

How did Cheltenham Town find themselves back in League Two?

Cheltenham are a club that have always been able to punch above their weight, with limited resources they were able to survive in the third tier and compete against some much bigger clubs thanks to some clever recruitment and smart management. However, the departure of key player Alfie May (amongst other things) contributed to a difficult season, of which despite Darrell Clarke’s best attempts they were unable to survive for another year. They will be hoping to rebuild and strengthen as they look to compete in an arguably much more competitive League Two.
