Under-21 European Champion Jonathan Rowe could leave Marseille this summer following their busy summer recruitment, with clubs already circling him.
The Ligue 1 side has already recruited fellow Englishman Angel Gomes, Timothy Weah, and Igor Paixao, as well as bringing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back to the club. All of these deals have pushed Rowe further down the pecking order at Marseille, and he could drop further if rumours of interest in Lille’s winger Edon Zhegova are true.
Last season, Rowe managed just six goal contributions in 28 league games for Roberto De Zerbi’s team.
Turkish giants Besiktas and Fernabache are both rumoured to be interested in the 22-year-old who initially joined Marseille from Norwich on loan last summer.
Rowe is rumoured not to be interested in a career switch to Turkey, but could have his head turned by Italian sides Roma and Atalanta, who have both been monitoring the situation. Atalanta may be keen to recruit the former Norwich man if they do end up losing Ademola Lookman, who has been pushing for his ‘promised’ move to Inter Milan all summer.
Marseille are reportedly open to the idea of selling Rowe, and English clubs could also be an option for the forward.
A return to England for the ex-Norwich man?
Leeds United have previously been linked with Rowe, when both he and the club were competing in the Championship, and have been linked once more now that they have returned to the Premier League.
The Yorkshire side have been linked to several elite forwards in recent weeks as they seek to recruit a quality striker to improve their front line. Both former Fulham man Aleksander Mitrovic and Champions League finalist Mehdi Taremi have been offered to Leeds United, but their ages may be a concern.
Could Leeds finally sign the ex-Norwich frontman that they previously missed out on? And can he help them stay afloat in the Premier League?
Jonathan Rowe impressed at Carrow Road during his time in the Championship, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 58 games, and attracting attention from Europe before his move to Marseille.
Since then, he has also played an integral part in England’s Under-21 European Championship success this summer. Rowe scored the winner for Lee Carsley’s side as they beat Germany 3-2 in the final to retain their trophy.
Much like some of his trophy-winning teammates, e.g. Harvey Elliott, Rowe has seen transfer interest in him rise once again. Although it appears that it is more of a case of Marseille hoping to make room for more signings than Rowe simply being hot property.
