Former Rochdale playmaker Danny Lloyd has joined National League North side Southport on a free transfer, as confirmed via a statement on the club’s website.

The 32-year-old recently became a free agent after returning South of the border but has opted for a return to his first-ever club rather than challenge himself in a higher division.

A dream return

Lloyd will return to Southport for the first time since the summer of 2011 when he originally left the club to join Colwyn Bay after two years with the first team.

Supporters of the National League North side were left ecstatic with the news of Lloyd’s return to the club, especially as they find themselves in a relegation battle ahead of their home fixture against promotion-chasing Brackley Town on Saturday.

He has signed a contract until the end of the 2024/25 season.

His recent spells

The playmaker finished the 2022/23 season with Rochdale but despite his impressive performances, it wasn’t enough to keep the club in the EFL and they were instead relegated to Non-League for the first time in over 100 years.

He contributed to nine goals in 25 appearances last season for the club and quickly became a fan favourite at Spotland.

After turning down the opportunity to stay, Lloyd moved to Scottish Premiership side Livingston in the hope of building on his tally. However, he was limited to just five appearances and was subsequently let go from his short-term contract.

What’s been said?

Speaking on the signing of Danny Lloyd, Southport manager Jim Bentley told the club’s website…

Danny is a player I know well and he is a big signing for the club. He had interest elsewhere after leaving Livingston in Scotland recently and I’m pleased he’s decided to return to where it all began for him.

He is a local lad living in the area, has great experience and will add something different to our squad. He is also very adaptable covering quite a few positions which is ideal and I’m sure he will create and score goals. “

Writer’s View

Danny Lloyd was possibly one of the few bright sparks in Rochdale’s disappointing campaign last season and his departure was seen as a ‘huge loss’ at the time.

Seeing him drop down a division to try and save Southport from relegation is a major statement from all parties involved because it shows that elements of loyalty do remain in football.

His experience, qualities and passion could be enough to turn around Southport’s dark campaign and as a result, keep them in the division.
