Former Scottish Championship Manager of the Year Becomes ‘Surprise Contender’ for Vacant Burton Albion Role

Former Bradford City and Blackpool manager Gary Bowyer has emerged as a surprise contender for the vacant managerial position at League One side Burton Albion.

The Brewers are currently battling to avoid relegation to the fourth tier but are currently struggling in League One having won just two of their opening 19 league games this season.

However, after being turned down by Crewe Alexandra manager Lee Bell, the club have identified a possible new target according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Bowyer on Burton’s radar

Gary Bowyer started his managerial career at Championship side Blackburn Rovers after impressing in two caretaker spells, but it was Blackpool where Bowyer established himself when he guided the club to an immediate return to League One with a playoff final victory in his first season.

Since then, he has had spells at League Two sides Bradford City and Salford City.

However, he has been out of management since leaving Dundee in May 2023, despite leading them to promotion and winning the SPFL Scottish Championship Manager of the Year award and he has now emerged as a surprise contender for the Burton Albion job.

Why are Burton Albion looking for a new manager?

Burton Albion have been without a permanent manager since the sacking of Mark Robinson after just ten games.

This is despite their British record-breaking summer for players signed in one window after the Brewers brought in 22 players, one higher than Nottingham Forest who held the record for 21 signings in one window.

Burton Albion have been without a manager for just short of two months and suffered a setback yesterday when it was believed that former Brewers player and current Crewe Alexandra head coach Lee Bell declined the role to return to the Pirelli Stadium.

Today it has emerged that Gary Bowyer could be in line to take the role that was vacated by Mark Robinson.

How are Burton Albion getting on in League One?

There were plenty of reasons for Brewers fans to be optimistic following their takeover from the Nordic Football Group in the summer however so far this season it hasn’t lived up to hope.

Burton Albion sit 23rd in League One with just two wins from 19 games and sits nine points from safety.

The Brewers were also part of an FA Cup upset after they lost to National League side Tamworth on penalties in the second round.

Therefore, Gary Bowyer will have a tough job on his hands if he takes the vacant managerial role at the Brewers.
