Former Swansea City loanee Matthew Sorinola has become a free agent, after his contract with Belgian side Union SG concluded, as confirmed via journalist Darren Witcoop.

The 22-year-old has failed to make a single appearance in Belgium so far this season, after returning from his loan spell in the Championship and is now on the lookout for his next move.

Sorinola began his career with MK Dons, rising through the club’s academy setup and into the first-team fold and made almost 50 appearances before leaving in 2021. He moved onto Belgian side Union SG on a free transfer but has only made 16 appearances for the club.

He made 31 appearances under Russell Martin at Swansea City last season, contributing to five goals in the process but has struggled to make the squad let alone play since his return to the Belgian Pro League this summer.

Sorinola is a versatile full-back who can operate on either side of the defence as well as play as a wide midfielder and would add improved options as well as Championship experience to whichever side wins the race for his signature now he has become a free agent.

His former side (Swansea City) are now under new management and have signed replacements during the summer. They currently sit 17th in the Championship following their heavy 5-0 defeat against Southampton on Boxing Day.

No sides have yet been credited with an interest in the defender but with the January transfer window looming, there is potential for clubs to be queuing up to land him.

Writer’s View

Sorinola is a terrific prospect who has plenty of EFL experience in his career so far, which will be of use to a lot of football clubs moving into the second half of their respective seasons.

Personally, I think a League One side such as Oxford United or Peterborough United could be an option for the defender, as he would get guaranteed minutes and would be involved with staff that have experience in developing younger talents.
