Former York City Winger Becomes Free Agent

Non-League side Marske United have confirmed the news that winger Nathan Thomas has left the football club, as confirmed via a social media post from the club’s page.

The 29-year-old left the Non-League side after his contract was terminated by mutual consent and he is now in search of the next club in his footballing career just three years after his departure from Premier League side Sheffield United.

Thomas joined Marske United on a free transfer in July 2023 after being released by National League side York City. He made 12 appearances in all competitions for the football club, scoring four goals in the process but is now on the lookout for the 14th club of his career.

The winger began his professional career with Plymouth Argyle after being released by Sunderland as a youth. He’s since had spells for Sheffield United, Carlisle United, Notts County and Hamilton Academical but has always struggled to find a consistent home throughout his career so far.

Marske United currently find themselves 20th in the Non-League Northern Premier Division this season, competing in the same division as Bradford Park Avenue, Macclesfield and FC United Of Manchester, but find themselves in the relegation zone. The club have lost 14 of their 19 matches this season but have as many as three games in hand on some of their opponents.

Thomas was limited to just 11 appearances for York City but struggled for game time as well as sustaining injuries which ultimately led to his exit after less than a year at the football club.

Writer’s View

Thomas has the talent to compete in the EFL but injuries have played a key role in stopping him from achieving the heights he once could.

There are several sides in the National League North that are in need of a player of his calibre. Some examples include Blyth Spartans or Scarborough Athletic but where his next moves is, remains to be seen.
