Formula One Drivers with the Most Race Starts

Formula 1 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix

Formula One in 2025 is set to see a lot of change, with six rookies coming into the sport.

So with several drivers set to get their first season under their belt, who are the drivers with the most race starts?

With the F1 race calendar getting longer, all the drivers in the top ten have raced in the 21st century.

The inaugural Formula One 1950 season had just seven rounds, including the Indy500 in which no F1 driver actually competed (confusing, I know).

That means that it would’ve taken Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950’s three times as long as it took Lance Stroll to get the same amount of starts in 2024 alone.

However, only two drivers who are on the 2025 Formula One grid, make the list.

So without further ado, who are the F1 drivers with the most race starts?

Daniel Ricciardo

The Aussie has amassed 257 race starts since making his debut for HRT at the British Grand Prix in 2011.

The former Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Renault, McLaren, and AlphaTauri driver scored eight wins and a total of 1329 career points.

Felipe Massa

Ninth on the list in the 2008 World Drivers’ Championship runner-up, Felipe Massa, who has 269 race starts.

The Brazilian spent seven years of his career at Ferrari, as well as spells at Sauber and Williams.

Sergio Perez

The Mexican looks like he could’ve raced his last of his 281 race starts in Formula One, in a career which started with Sauber in 2011.

He also had spells at McLaren, Force India, Racing Point, and Red Bull, picking up six wins.

Sebastian Vettel

The four time World Champion has the seventh most race starts in F1 history, just missing out on 300 starts (299).

Vettel made his debut in 2007 with BMW Sauber, before switching to Toro Rosso where he scored his and the team’s first win.

A successful spell at Red Bull immortalised the German, who also had spells with Ferrari and Aston Martin.

Jenson Button

Just the second world champion on this list, Jenson Button has the sixth most race starts with 306.

Button made his debut in 2000 with Williams. He also had spells at Benetton, Renault, BAR, Honda, Brawn, and McLaren.

His 2009 success is undoubtedly one of F1’s greatest underdog success stories of all time.

Michael Schumacher

Arguably the best driver of all time, Michael Schumacher has the fifth most race starts in F1, totalling 307.

His seven World Championships weren’t without controversy, but the legendary German, who had success with Benetton and Ferrari, will always be remembered for his incredible speed and skill behind the wheel.

Rubens Barrichello

Until recently, Rubens Barrichello had the most race starts in F1 history with 323.

He now sits outside the podium place for longevity in F1, but the Brazilian will be remembered for his teamwork and likeability.

Teammate to Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button, perhaps the phrase “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” is appropriate here.

Kimi Raikkonen

The Ice-cool Finish driver, and 2007 World Champion with Ferrari, totalled 350 race starts in his career.

Raikkonen made his debut with Sauber, before spells at McLaren, Ferrari, a break for some rallying and NASCAR action, before returning to race for Lotus, Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo.

Lewis Hamilton

Statistically the best racer of all time, Sir Lewis Hamilton has the second most race starts with 356 starts.

After his first success with McLaren in 2008, his iconic stint at Mercedes saw six more World Championships added to his collection.

The Brit will hope to add more to his trophy cabinet as he joins Ferrari for the 2025 World Championship.

Fernando Alonso

Of course, the driver with the most race starts in history is the two time World Champion, Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard made his debut in 2001 with Minardi, before moving to Renault where he won his two titles in 2005 and 2006.

Stints with McLaren, Ferrari, McLaren once more, Alpine, and Aston Martin failed to recreate that success so far. The search for win 33 continues.
