Four Premier League Players Who Are at Risk of a Two Game Ban

Four Premier League players are currently at risk of serving a two-game suspension due to picking up 10 yellow cards.

FA rules state: “Players who receive a total of 10 yellow cards in their side’s first 32 Premier League matches receive a two-match suspension.”

As well as the four players listed below, who are on nine cautions, there are a further six players on eight yellow cards.

Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is one of those six and he could pick up his ninth yellow card against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Flynn Downes – Southampton

The Southampton midfielder has picked up nine yellow cards in just 18 appearances in the Premier League this season.

Downes hasn’t played since the 19th of January when he picked up a yellow card against Nottingham Forest.

Saints manager Ivan Juric left Downes out of the squad against Burnley in the FA Cup.

Juric revealed Downes was subject of a late bid from Ipswich Town but Southampton blocked the move.

He told BBC: “”It is an ugly situation because his attitude was not good. It is a little bit of a club problem, but we will see.”

If the midfielder was to return this weekend and pick up a booking, he would miss the Saints away games to Chelsea and Liverpool.

Joelinton – Newcastle United

The Magpies midfielder is currently dealing with a knee injury which has seen him miss cup wins over Arsenal and Birmingham City respectively, as well as a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City last weekend.

‘Big Joe’ isn’t due back from injury until mid-March but considering the matchday 32 cut-off isn’t until mid-April, there remains a big risk that the Brazilian midfielder could face a two-game ban.

Joelinton is no stranger to double figures in cards as the Newcastle midfielder picked up 12 yellow cards during the 2022/23 season.

Ryan Christie – Bournemouth

Christie and Bournemouth are enjoying a fine season.

The Cherries currently sit fifth in the table, only a point behind fourth-placed Man City.

The Scotland international midfielder has two goals and three assists to his name this season including a goal and an assist in Bournemouth’s 3-1 win over Southampton last time out.

However, If Christie was to pick up a booking this weekend against Wolverhampton Wanderers, he would miss the Cherries’ games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur.

Sasa Lukic – Fulham

The Serbian defensive midfielder picked up an injury in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Lukic is expected to return early March from his muscle injury, well before the week 32 deadline for the two-game suspension.

He last picked up a yellow card 18th of January in Fulham’s 2-0 win away to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Although he has never hit 10 yellow cards in the Premier League, Lukic did reach double figure cautions during the 2021/22 season in Serie A with Torino.
