Two major surprises from France as two big players left out

Frances’ long time captain Wendie Renard is one of the biggest names who has been left out of the France squad by manager Laurent Bonadei. Renard has played 168 times for her country since making her debut way back in 2011. But she has missed three of the past four games due to injury.

Nevertheless, her experience in both major tournaments for her country and major domestic tournaments with Lyon is outstanding, so for France not to have their main leader this summer is a real blow for them.

The other big omission from the squad by Bonadei is France’s all-time leading goalscorer, Eugenie Le Sommer. Le Sommer has scored 94 goals in 200 appearances for her country. Her goals and overall physical presence up front for France will also be missed this summer.

After leaving both Renard and Le Sommer out of his Nations League squad last month, Bonadei said: “As Einstein said: ‘Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.’ I want different results for this team, so I have gone with a different selection.”

He’s stood by this going into the Euros this summer, and France are still searching for their first major tournament victory, could leaving these two out be pivotal to Bonadei and Frances’ success?

Key player – Sandy Baltimore

25-year-old Sandy Baltimore joined Chelsea from PSG before the WSL season started. The midfielder ended up playing a lot of the season as a full-back but still managed to grab four goals and 3 assists in 15 league appearances. She also shone in competitions such as the Women’s FA Cup, League Cup, and Champions League.

Baltimore will be key for France this summer because she is a huge goal threat from midfield and she is strong, pacey, and skillful. If she plays as good as she has for Sonia Bompastor in the Euros, she will cause England, Holland, Wales and the other teams a lot of problems.
