League Two leaders Gillingham are poised to complete the deadline day signing of Watford defender Travis Akomeah.

Gareth Ainsworth’s side have begun the season very strongly, so far unbeaten after six league matches. They are keen to capitalise on their fast start and are prioritising their backline as the deadline draws closer.

The 19-year-old will join an impermeable defensive unit, with the Gills having only conceded three times in League Two so far this term.

As reported by Pete O’Rourke, Akomeah is poised for a prolonged spell at the Priestfield Stadium.

Gillingham To Reinforce Inform Defence

Gareth Ainsworth is thoroughly enjoying his early months in Kent. His team has been free scoring and currently sits at the summit of League Two at this early stage of the campaign.

He recently spoke about the mentality of his new side, highlighting how much fun he is having at the Gillingham helm.

“Total, total pride. A real enjoyment of what I’m seeing, how I’m seeing this team develop” Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent

The 52-year-old has deployed a back three so far, a game plan working a treat and providing great joy to the Gillingham faithful.

The imminent arrival of Akomeah from Watford will provide a youthful exuberance capable of offering relief to the likes of Robbie McKenzie and Sam Gale.

How Has He Fared At Watford

Akomeah has made his way steadily through the youth ranks at Vicarage Road. He predominantly featured in the under-18 Premier League for the Hornets.

He returned to his boyhood club in February after a brief stint away in the Chelsea Academy. In all, he has featured 47 times in the youth ranks, garnering valuable experience.

At 6ft 3in, the Englishman possesses a commanding presence and is likely to provide a great option for Gillingham as the games begin to come thick and fast.

Watford Sends Young Defender For Gillingham Loan

Watford seems to have got the majority of their transfer business done prior to deadline day. Their focus is on securing the right moves for their departing stars.

The arrival of Manchester City under-21 defender Max Alleyne and Mark Bola from Samsunspor has left Paulo Pezzolano well-versed in defensive options.

By allowing Akomeah to head out on loan, they are allowing him the stage to develop at a rapid rate in League Two. Especially given the confidence and strength of Gillingham’s existing defensive group.

The highly-rated centre half will hope to contribute towards Gillingham maintaining their early-season promotion form.
