Grimsby Town have announced the signing of forward Tyrell Sellars-Fleming on a loan deal until the end of the season from Championship side Hull City.
The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at arch rivals Scunthorpe United, where he featured 18 times across all competitions as part of the Iron’s National League play-off push.
A Chance To Shine
It was initially revealed by Mike White of BBC Humberside that Tyrell Sellars-Fleming had been recalled by Hull City, with the expectation that he would join Grimsby Town for the remainder of the season.
The versatile forward becomes the Mariners’ second January signing, allowing him to gain valuable League Two experience for the first time. This move follows the arrival of goalkeeper Jackson Smith, who made the switch to League Two on loan from Barnsley yesterday after a series of emergency loans.
A product of the Iron Academy, Sellars-Fleming moved to Hull City in August 2023 before rejoining the North Lincolnshire side in the summer. He has enjoyed an impressive start to the season for Scunthorpe United, scoring five goals in 14 National League appearances.
Grimsby’s campaign has begun to fall flat after starting brightly, with the club sitting in the top three for long spells and enjoying a memorable EFL Cup run which saw wins over Manchester United and crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.
This latest move also comes as a blow for Scunthorpe, who currently sit sixth in the table, eleven points clear of danger and just six off the summit. The loss of Sellars-Fleming’s direct running and goal threat could prove significant as Andy Butler’s side enters the crucial second half of the season.
High Praise From Mariners
Speaking to the club’s official website, Artell discussed the move for the 20-year-old:
“Tyrell is a player we’ve been aware of for some time and one who fits the profile we were looking for.”
“He’s quick, hungry and has a natural instinct in and around the box, which is reflected in his goal record at youth level and the experience he’s already gained in senior football.”
“He’s had exposure to first-team environments at a good level and benefited from his time out on loan, so this move is about giving him the opportunity to continue that development with us. We’re looking forward to working with him for the remainder of the season and adding another attacking option to the group.”
Time For The Season To Ignite
After a promising start to the campaign in both league and cup, the Mariners’ league form has begun to lose some momentum, with the side currently sitting 12th on 34 points.
That said, the play-off picture remains firmly within reach, with just six points separating Grimsby Town from a return to the top seven.
David Artell will now surely be focused on building upon the foundations already in place, rather than wholesale change, and the arrival of Tyrell Sellars-Fleming appears to align neatly with that approach.
His pace, technical ability and goal threat offer qualities that could provide a timely lift and help the Mariners edge their way back up the table before the gap to the play-offs widens.
