Grimsby Town are expected to complete the signing of Cheltenham Town midfielder Curtis Thompson before the 11pm deadline, according to journalist Jon Palmer via Gloucestershire Live.
The 30-year-old is expected to leave the League One side today to join the Mariners, ending his almost six-month stint with Cheltenham Town in the process.
Who is Curtis Thompson?
Thompson is a product of Notts County’s academy, breaking through as a 16-year-old back in 2011 as well as enjoying a loan stint with Lincoln City. He remained with the Magpies until 2018 when he made the loan move to Wycombe Wanderers before turning it into a permanent one six months later.
During his time at Adams Park, Thompson made over 150 appearances, contributing to five goals as well as playing a vital role as the Chairboys sealed promotion into the Championship.
After being released in the summer, the 30-year-old has made 22 appearances in all competitions but new boss Darrell Clarke has given Thompson just two substitute appearances in his last four games.
A busy January continues
Grimsby Town have experienced a very busy January transfer window with plenty of arrivals and departures as they attempt to turn their disappointing form around and pull away from a potential relegation battle.
Midfielder Kamil Conteh was sold to Bristol Rovers whilst Otis Khan and Luke Waterfall joined National League side Hartlepool United.
Meanwhile, David Artell’s men had secured the likes of Doug Tharme, Justin Obikwu and Harry Wood in a bid to try and push on after a frustrating start to the 2023/24 campaign.
Why has he departed?
Despite featuring heavily for Cheltenham Town so far this season, Thompson has been permitted to depart the League Two side today.
The club have signed midfield duo Josh Harrop and Liam Kinsella whilst Tom Pett signed a new contract, which has seen the 30-year-old slip down the pecking order.
Writer’s View
Thompson is an experienced midfielder in the lower tiers of the EFL and will be an excellent signing for the League Two side moving into the second half of the season.
The club have lost four of their last six matches in all competitions and have slipped to 20th in League Two meaning the signing of Thompson has arrived at the perfect time.
